Checking this is a good place to start...

http://www.xterraownersclub.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=000119

it will give you a lot of good info on how to use the transfer case and when to.

4x2 is for everyday driving..

4x4hi is for when you are slipping in 4x2. such as snow, dirt or any low traction areas.

4x4lo is for extreme situations, such as hill climbs and discents.

there is a lot more info to be learned, i would read the manual, search this site and google it.

Try this it tells you how 4 wheel drive works. . Also, make sure you read the owners manual it will tell you all about how to shift, and when. Also, great purchase. [ThumbsUp]

Thanks.... I had a 4x4 wrangler about 10 years ago... so the shifting I Know and when to use it... with all the conversations on here I wasn't sure if the dealer screwed me.... It said 4x4 but then I didn't know what the hell 4x2 meant... thanks again...

On a side note I have been lurking here since yesterday... some really good information... Although I don't think I will get a chance to do any offroading in nyc.... might get out to the mountains to try my hand at it...

Not to sound like an ass or anything, but:

You owned a Wrangler before and you don't know the difference between 4x4 and 4x2? or what the transfer case is for? eek

What did you do with your Wrangler back then? Cruise to the mall and buy eggs at the grocery store all day? laugh

Probably because they referred to it as 2 wheel drive vs. 4 wheel drive. Just a terminology difference (I believe). 4x4 vs. 4x2 just means the same thing, just a different way of putting it.

Getting a 4x4 in NYC, I see a little bit of subliminal meaning there....

I think she might want to move out of the big city!

I'm in NYC all the time....the 4wd is great for climbing out of potholes and collapsed roadways, going over sidewalks to get around jams, etc.

laugh

I also have my version of a 4x2...only its a 2x4...but I use it for framing.

There are good places an hour or two from the city to wheel.

I had a Jeep too, I considered it to be a truck though (Frame, etc...)...

Trying your hand at off roading is a great idea...lots of fun. (The Jeep would have been great at it too)

So - Is it the wife's, or yours? IE: Do you need to borrow it/will she let you go?

wink

laugh

You shouldn't even own a car.

This coming from a guy who calls himself Muddy X and this is the muddiest pic he's got.

NINJA PLEASE!![/b]
Oh, Jesus Christ Almighty! Of course, since I don't have a muddy picture posted on the Internet in my gallery, I'm not worthy of a username.

Shut up, please. [Finger]

Not to mention, what does that have to do with knowing 4x4 gears?

I've seen that X muddier than that, and it was just going to the campsite...

Hmm, imagine, not everybody posts up pictures on their trucks all the time.

Shocking!

Maybe people have other priorities, than posing for the camera? Like maybe driving??

Man the intelligence level around here scares me sometimes...
