To waterproof the electrics and alternator...I recommend starting at the spark plug boots, and working back to the distributer cap, coating all the wires and connections as you go...and then continue from the cap to battery and alternator wires and connections....then, go from there, to where ever the wires lead to, fuse boxes, relays, etc.
Priorities if pressed for time....all spark plug related, battery hot and ground to frame/engine connections, and...for the alternator....you are hitting the connections, but also spraying right into all of those slots and holes where the windings and brushes, etc live.
I like to spray it, let it sit a bit (Dry), run it a bit (To expose new areas inside...), and hit it again.
The Mil spec stuff is top drawer....PepBoys, etc, carry Wire Drier and other varieties that also work, and are fairly equivalent.
I also use dielectric grease on contacts such as bulbs, in spark plug boots, etc....and anti-corrosion films on the battery terminals.
With the X, I've never had an electical failure or stall off road...that's not to say I couldn't, lord knows I've tempted fate a few times...but a stitch in time saves 9, etc.
