what do you mean meter? like the light thing that tests if theres electricity running through it?
That would be a good start if it lights for DC current.
A multimeter would give more info though.
IE: You are checking to see if electricity is going INTO the harness, FROM the xterra...and if it IS, then you are seeing if its coming OUT of the harness.
If its ALSO coming out of the harness plug for the trailer, you then see if the lights on the trailer are getting juice...and if they are you change the bad light bulb or fix the loose socket, etc.
