im looking to trade in and get an 01 X but I'm not seeing alot of venders showing love for the 1st Gen's, allways the 2nd (05+)..

am i looking at the wrong places? im not going to go nuts, but would like to get a feel of what im getting my self into... I seen an X today that was caked... i mean caked as in you couldn't tell what the stock color was, but it was done up nice (lights and other add ons but couldn't see what they was because of the mud lol)

anywho...

point me in the right direction.

Not sure what you are asking. I have an 01, got lots of love for it, does everything I ask, reliable and will last many more years if looked after.
First Gens. are getting rare...due to their age and the fact that those of us who have a good one wont part with them.
But then, a lot of guys on here have 2nd gens., lot of love for those also.

yeah, i got my eyes on some rock sliders and the underbelly aka skidplates.. the wife just doesn't know it yet.

is there a list of parts someplace that cross over, i mean does some of the 05+ stuff fit on the 01s?

and would a blue 01 look good with black bumpers (the plastics on this one are sunfaded and thats the first thing thats getting done)?

There is really nothing that crosses over between the two gens, not even the ATF that they call for.

By the way all of them look good with black bumpers, they look even better with steel bumpers painted black.

Hey Grimm, maybe before starting the paint job, try the heat gun!... My bumpers looked a little dull, so I used a heat gun and took my time, passing the heat gun over the bumper plastics really does bring them back to an origional color. I did mine probably about two years ago, spent about an hour going all around the truck, and they still look as good as the day I did them.

Just trying to throw out a simpler, cheaper option, heat gun at Harbor Freight, what, 20 to 30 bucks, and about an hour to do, compared to painting??? Just be sure to take your time, not get tooooooo close til you see how it works, cuz too close, you can melt the plastic with it! start further away than you think you need to be, and slowly move in closer, making sure to keep the heat gun moving , never staying on one spot.

and i know what they can do to close to an object... ever work on a balsa model? ever have one combust into flames on your work bench?? yeah it happens lol

thanks for the tip, i'll know in 12hrs if its a done deal.

Well, if $2,600 is 1/8 scale, that's not TOO bad.

cool

Don't BUY stuff yet though....its better to wheel it stock-ish for a while to see what it and you, can do, and, where you find, for YOU, that improvements are in order.

If you buy a whole bunch of stuff at once, typically, later, you see OTHER stuff, and say "Damn, if I'd KNOWN I was going to XYZ, I wouldn't have wasted time and money on ABC".

laugh

A build PATH is the best route...and its typically hard to know what you need until you see it NEEDED.

laugh

Some exceptions can be made for guys who have gone through the process, and get the X knowing what they need for it already...but that's a headstart.

What works in NJ Pine Barrens might not cut it in Moab, and what works on slick rock at Moab might leave you stranded in the NJ Pine Barrens, etc.

You modify with the expected terrain in mind too.

Thanks TJ,

only thing that i want to get is the rock sliders for starters as my "nerf" bars look well plan lol (till i tuch them up with some paint)

but i see what your saying as it aplies to r/c too, different tracks, different groves, so thats tires/diff setups/shocks etc that need to be tweeked.

thanks for the input

OK, here's an example of a build path:

IF you want sliders, you ALSO want to know if you are going to want larger TIRES.

This sounds odd at first, but, on the 2000 - 2004 X's, you can fit UP to 32" tires w/o a body lift.

IF you want 33" or larger tires, you need a body lift (BL) to make room in the (Mostly front) wheel wells....or, go mad max, and remove the fenders and/or parts thereof that the tires hit, etc.

So - IF you want 33's...you want a BL typically to FIT them...and, that means, you need to do the BL BEFORE THE SLIDERS.

The reason for THAT is - They MAKE sliders FOR the 2" BL, and, in non-BL versions.

So, if you don't have a BL, and you get sliders for the non-BL, and then later want 33's...you then DO a BL, but have sliders for the NON-BL.

laugh

See what I mean?

All THAT means that, most likely, as almost every one DOES want 33's on their 2000 - 2004 X, you will now need a 2" BL (Or 3" BL...) along with SLIDERS FOR the BL.

You then install the BL, and, THEN the sliders, as the BL version sliders don't fit a non-BL X.

Go with the Shrockworks sliders and the BL, that's a great combo btw.
