I say, (aside from easing up on the pedal), find some other expense in your life that you can do without and put the money toward your thirsty X! And maybe carpool with someone?

I'm riding my bike to work, since its only about 3 miles. I have also changed my driving habits, and since my one ton gets better gas milage, it is being called on more for long distance trips.

No chance of ditching the x. Can you say car pool. Luckily my wife and i teach in the same school so we take the 96 sentra. Much better on gas plus we live near other teachers.
Its crazy how many car these days are only carrying 1 person. We have been f'ing up mother earth so long, it was only a matter of time til she kicked us in the balls. We need the govt to invest less in thier paychecks and more into clean alternative fuel soucres.
It ridiculous in my eyes the fact i can only eat fish that i catch ounce a month.

I have an easy solution. My mom drives only 2 miles to work so during the week we trade cars. I get to putt around in an old 90 Accord and keep my Xterra for the fun stuff

My wife just started working again after 10 years of being a stay-at-home Mom. Good timing, eh? I just have her drop me off at work and pick me up on the way home. Ta-da, I don't have to drive my X to work (she has an X, too). On the other hand, our gas savings is marginal in this circumstance, since I only commute 1.8 miles to work. 1/4 tank of gas usually gets me to and from work for two weeks.

damn, how do you average 20mpg, mostly highway im assuming? I would say it is probably 60% highway driving. But I have very few stops (sign/lights) when I go into work at 4:30 am, so I suppose that helps.

quit driving the x when gas went up to $1.79. drive on job so the wife now drives x, i drive 94 civic with 35-40 mpg. won't get rid of x, just adjust to higher gas prices. vacation in october will be at home (possible local camping at lake) and we may start car pooling three days a week.

Just got the thing. It's not going anywhere. The extra price of gas is not going to break my bank any time soon. I may cut back on the 15 minute trip home for lunch every day. My gym is relocating about half the distance from home that it is now so that will save. May spend some more time in the V6 Mustang instead. It needs some excercise anyway

The extra cost of gasoline for my X will add about $6-$7 to my weekly fill-up. That's a far cry from the $300-$400 per month it will cost in new car monthly payments My '02 is paid off. The 14 mpg I see hasn't changed since I've owned it (I have the K&N FIPK and a Calmini exhaust sytem installed). The only variable is the price of the gas and that isn't enough of a reason for me to get rid of it. Someone mentioned hybrids and high mpg cars. In my area, there is at least a 4 month wait on the Prius or Civic and expect to pay at least $1500+ over sticker. None of these cars, including the other high mpg cars is as versatile as the X nor as tractable in the winter months. Additionally, I spend alot of time on construction sites. I can't imagine myself dealing with ruts and other construction site obstacles in any of the economy cars................. Just my $.02

Hell No...Would not even think about dumping my X...What for...just like someone mentioned...if you trade in your X, they will screw you anyway...if you get a second car with fantastic MPG's...you still have to pay Insurance for not one but 2 vehicles...just sacrifice some of the good things in life...drink and smoke less or stop completely...stop buying Porno Mags every Month and stop Gambling...all those will save you big bucks...

I use my Xterra for company travel onto construction sites (until today when my battery died). For the time being (This project) my gas costs are paid for by my firm. When this project ends, I will go back to riding BART daily ( www.bart.org). So it doesn't really hit me that hard.

I remember 14 cents a gallon...when I was a kid in South Carolina. The X gets about 20 mpg, give or take, depending upon my right foot/traffic, etc. My Wife's Mini Cooper gets about 36 mpg on her daily slog....but she needs premium. So - if I decide to give up a hobby I love, I can save money on gas, and mods, etc...if I want to wheel though...by the time you factor in reliability, mileage, carrying capacity, etc...I'd need another X, or give something up.

It stayed at $1.20-$1.30 for quite awhile after that... and then... oh... I don't remember exactly when - but last summer or so it started climbing to 1.50, 1.60, 1.70++++ and lookee where we are now. This has always been my complaint about the rising prices - I know that they must go up over time due to inflation etc - but the rate at which they jumped up was insane. I am now paying TRIPLE what I was paying just 3 years ago.... tell me someone isn't making out like a damn bandit here.

Until now I was okay, now that it is close to $3 I must do other things. I teacher at a school 3 miles away and rode my bike for the first time this year. Somewhat looking for a POS for this commute during the winter.
I just got a camper and love the mountains too much to get rid of 4x4 for good.

Not going to sell my X, & am not going to stop wheeling either.
I will however likely get a commute-mo-bile.
