05 scion xb, just never really got into it. It was a ticket magnet too. I had nothing for 4 years in my civic but 1 year in that thing and i got 3 tickets. Plus i wanted something to be able to tow my bike with and go offroading with my buddies. 2 weeks now and i'm standing behind that choice.

Well I traded in a 99 Oldmobile Alero for it but I had an 01 Frontier also. That's what really convinced me to go with the X.

2004 VW Jetta GLS and 1997 VW Jetta GLX VR6.
They were nice cars and I enjoyed them but needed something bigger and better. The VWs also ate tires like they were candy.

I went ahead and got rid of my diesel for various reasons: partly due to fuel costs, partly due to me having to be all up on the engine a couple of times a month. be warned: diesel hotrodding can get stupid expensive when you break stuff. it ran liked a raped ape and 4x4'ed good with the 285's I had for it., but I got it used and I didn't like the flaws and issues that were there before me or I would have kept it as a third car. notice the detroit locker action on the rear.

2000 VW GTI 1.8T Loved that car, but my ex girlfriend and her dogs tore it to shit over a weekend when I was borrowing her Jeep. Needless to say the Ex and the dogs went the way of the car... here's a pic, not of mine, but that's what she looked like only with stock wheels

1997 Ford Expedition XLT Prematurely retired by a hit & run driver @ 109,000 miles. It never let me down and always got me through all kinds of terrain and trouble. Be it mud, water, snow, ice, or sand...it always performed. It towed everything and then some. It moved me twice & moved two of my friends twice each. Never a problem. Never a hesitation. It was always my intent to get an X, just not a year earlier than I had planned. Never planned on getting rid of my EX, it was supposed to tow the big boy toys. FORD: First On Race Day B.

1992.5 (yes, I said point 5) Nissan pickup. Base model. 2WD, plastic floor, 4-banger, AM/FM cassette. BASE.
10 years, 100,000 miles, back-and-forth across this great nation twice, and NOT ONE SINGLE PROBLEM. Hated to see it go, but had to have an Xterra. Will always buy Nissan.

2000 Fronty King Cab that I got new. Needed the extra room for the youngin' and the dog. Had a '74 Datsun pickup (was it the Fronty then too?) way back when and it ran like a raped ape. I could literally beat the shit out of that truck and it'd just keep going. Made me decide when I got my next REAL truck to go back to Nissan. Haven't been sorry yet. (Had a '89 S-10 for 11 years too. Great truck, but it was a just toy. Not a REAL truck by any means... IYKWIM!) -G-

Man some of you guys have way too much cash. My ride before the x was a 1988 Plymouth Acclaim Talk about a tank, it was a 4 banger and it had one dead cylinder. Drove like a champ, still got like 20 mpg out of it. Merging was always a fun experience. Had one weird issue though, every time I would take a corner too fast... the entire thing would shut off, no lights no nothing... It would start again no problem.... weird...

OK, are you ready? From left to right: 1986 Ford F-150 - sold a few months after I bought... 2000 Nissan Xterra XE 4x2 - daughter totalled it for me in December, 2004. Bought the current truck with the insurance proceeds. 1969 VW Beetle - Still around, kids drive it most of the time. 1971 VW Beetle (aka Herbie) - daughter's Bug. Currently undergoing a 2nd resto, to be painted a deep, metallic blue.

Previous truck was a 91 white Hardbody. Bought it in 92 and traded it in for $1500 in 01 for the X. Had 165,000 on it, first gear started to go at about 160k but other than that only had to replace the clutch at 120k and the slave cylinder at 60k. Had a couple of motorcycles before I joined the Navy, 81 Suzuki GS450E and a 84 KZ700. Only other car was my first car in HS, a 69 Camaro, nothing special but sure wish I would've kept it. Anyone wanting to get rid of a 69 Camaro?

Sold my 97 Rav4 with 170k miles on it that consumed about as much oil as gas the same day I bought my Xterra in 2003. Car was a lemon from day one but I must admit the toyota name kept the value up as I was still able to get 4k for the damn thing. Still have my first car a 1975 MGB that I just restored. A very very fun car to drive.

Traded my '04 Infiniti G35 for my '05 OR X . Had an '89 Chevy Blazer which, aside from having no internal lights and a failing electrical system, ran pretty well... Just got too old and beat up.
The G35 was fun but I didn't get to use it much in the Fall/Winter due to weather.
If I have to keep something in the garage, it might as well be a bike.
The G35 and Blazer went. Now I love my Xterra, and for fun, the VTX 1800.

Only had 2 before my X 1. A little red 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage. Got great gas mileage, but not much of a looker.
2. A black 98 Chevy Silverado single cab. Not a bad truck, had a lot of miles on it and seemed on the verge of some problems.

My first car was a 1984 Corolla SR5 GT, didn't know what I had until after I wrecked it. After the wrecked I picked up a 1992 4 door Civic. After selling the Civic, I joined the Nissan family and purchased a 2002 Spec V.

'71 Chevy Malibu - beautiful but winters and salt did it in '74 Renault R12 with four dead shocks and bad brakes...but someone gave me $40 for it. '90 Mazda 323..had this cheap little rocket for eight years and drove the crap out of it. Miss it the most. '88 Ford Bronco 4x4 loads of fun '90 Mitshubishi Montero..had 75,000 on it when i got it, put another 80,000 myself. '93 Mitshubishi Montero..never had it long..bad engine first..got it fixed..then it died in a flood. Edit: Oops forgot the 1993 Jeep Laredo..had it just a little bit..traded it in for the 2001 X. 2001 Xterra....best truck I ever owned...the day i traded it in for the 2005 X, it still drove solid as a rock. You all should be glad you don't own one of these.....I don't own it...but I wouldn't admit it if I did, either.

Saturn 2002 VUE V6 AWD, Auto. Many problems, wanted an X back then but the new-at-the-time VUE made more sense for the new longer commute I got by moving.
Drove like a car, better quickness than you would think, but many problems - detailed:
-Right off the bat - rear washer not working, bad map light (no big deal, yet) -Wind deflectors peeling off (common among all makes, to some extent) -Tech lost two lug nut caps and didn't realize until I got home (service issue) End of 1st year, no big deal...
-Thermostat replaced under warranty from "SES" light -Major oil leak involving front valve cover was loose (nice acrid oil smell after repair and pressure wash) -Front washer not working, replaced new washer nozzles (not good in the middle of a Northeastern winter) -Frozen throttle plate (twice), have to stop and restart engine to clear, no fix according to tech -Retape wind deflectors (again) -Dome lights don't flas and daytime running lights are out, major investigation to find and fix "resistor" failure Two years down, not really happy at this point...
-2nd Major oil leaks 11 months after first (led me to call Saturn HQ to demand and get an extended warranty) -Clunking noise during turns: 1. Loose stabilizer links 2. Right strut mount, (both replaced) -Crankcase hose replaced (overnight wait) -Rear lateral link replaced (believed that was a recall) -Hood wind deflector loose again, this time they don't have any tape, fix myself Right around three years, reliabilty is not a word used at this point...
-Fun one: horn gets stuck on, remove fuse before going to dealer. They had to replace whole steering wheel airbag/horn assembly (fortunately warranty covers it) -Squeaking steering, this time they just have to grease up column -Fails state inspection, tie rod/steering rack replaced (again under warranty)
End of saga, X will be in my driveway tomorrow...

99 Saturn SL2 - loved it, was a great car, totalled in a 4-car smash up on the freeway a month and a half ago:( Got this 2002 SL2 to replace it: I had the 2002 for 3 weeks and it was acting up, the tranny was acting funny, the brakes were mushy. My husband Alex drove it for a day and said something really bad was getting ready to happen. I took advantage of the Saturn dealer's 30-day exchange policy (plus I had already taken it back to the service dept a few times already), the only catch is you have to pick something in their inventory, new or used. We were looking at a Honda Element and then we looked over a few spots and there sat a 2003 Xterra 2WD with 51,600 miles on it. Test drove it, fell in love. The money we spent purchasing the Saturn went toward the price of the X, so it worked out that the Saturn exchange paid for half the X's selling price I still miss the 99 SL2 sometimes, in 77K miles the only thing I had to do to it aside from regular maintenance was replace a temeperature sensor ($15 and 10 minutes).

Isuzu Rodeo, my first 4WD. Back before they got all curvy and aerodynamic. Put 90k on it and then had to put in a new engine after I ran through too much water (yeah, I should have walked it first to check the depth) and bent a rod. After that (probably related to that), every month I had to replace something new--alternator, brakes, fuel pump, water pump. After a while, I figured I was sinking as much money into it each month as I'd make on new car payments, so I bought the XTerra.
(I didn't drive any new Rodeos or Troopers before I bought the XTerra, since there aren't any dealers within 100 miles of where I live.)

Previously I had a 1999 Nissan Maxima SE which I loved, it was a very reliable, sporty and fun car to drive. My wife totalled it a few months ago and my insurance gave me much more than I expected for it and I picked up the Xterra.
I'm a Nissan guy, I love their cars and trucks. The Maxima was the only car that I have owned, everything else in my life has been either a truck, Jeep or SUV, I just love to wheel!
I've owned a 78 CJ5, 98 Cherokee, 96 Tacoma, 94 Bronco, the Maxima and now the Xterra.

Bought my X to replace a 1997 Jeep Wrangler Sport. The Jeep was getting to the point where it was going to part me to death. And I just couldn't bear the thought of driving through a Minnesota winter in a soft top Jeep with a bad heater.
Prior to that I had a 1993 Nissan Sentra that had around 160,000 on it when I sold it and it still ran great. So it is good to be back to Nissan.

I had a 2004 Nissan Murano and what a gutless wonder it was. The CVT sapped the power, could barely pull my two 4-wheelers up a hill and was such a gas hog that I was happy to get 18 MPG out of the Xterra. I traded mine in on the X as soon as the tranny was making the death rattle that had already afflicted a co-workers Murano after about 20,000 miles. It did have a slick AWD system that made great rally cross four wheel drifts in the snow and did have a system similar to E-locker. Before that, 2003 BMW 325Ci that I loved but quickly found the need for room that a coupe could never give.

Crummy picture, but here was arguably one of my favorite former minimalist vehicles: This car helped me through some bad times. At the time, we only had one car and I was counting on rides to work. Then, the place I was working closed down (fortunately, with sufficient warning for me to find another job). My new job was 30 miles away and none of my co-workers lived near me, so it was off to find a 2nd vehicle. With severance pay from my previous job, I had a $900 budget to get something reliable enough to make a 60 mile round trip each day. After finding lots of barely running rustbuckets in my price range, a friend told us that her brother had this car just sitting around and might sell it. I ended up driving away with it for $400. It was 20 years old at the time and had about 75k miles on the odo. It ran reliably for two years, other than the long term effects of living in the salt belt (Indiana). I'd buy another one for a fun vehicle any time.

A 2005 35th Anniversary Nissan 350Z. My SUV that the Xterra replaced was a Honda CR-V which was a really fine SUV but I needed something with more towing ability.

I started out with “Ward” a 1979 Caprice Classic station wagon. Two tone “rally” paint with the family truckster package. It ensured my continued virginity in high school. I sold it to buy a mountain bike.
Then came “the Z” it was a 1982 280ZX. I loved that car. I had it repainted and was getting ready fix some issues with the interior when someone pulled out in front of me. The Z came to an unglorified end in the side of a Chevette that was filled with open buckets of latex paint. Unfortunately, there was an unsecured kid in the right seat. With their clever ambulance chasing lawyer, the Chevette driver got enough money pay off his house and set up his kid’s trust fund. The lawyer replaced his S600 with a new one.
With the money I got from the Z, bought “Chester” my little 1987 323. Chester and I had many good miles including several trips to Colorado during college. Chester was sold to a Japaneese exchange student who paid $4000 for the car in $100 dollar bills. I spent the entire test drive counting money from a paper bag.
Next was Norm, my cherry ’85 CJ-7. I still have norm after 120K miles and many, many modifications. Norm served as a daily driver for several years, but had spent the last dozen as a toy. I will never part with that thing. Sniff….
Next was a series of Chevy trucks: “Bluto” a 92 Chevy P/U that suffered from a failing fuel pumps and a set of previous owner installed glass packs, and “Clint” a black ’92 4wd Suburban that I smashed up twice as I was trying to sell it. One wreck involved my own Jeep, the other involved a chicken and an abandoned tractor trailer.
Before the X I had car known as the “Golden Bubble,” the “Space Pod” and the “Barcalounger” interchangeably. It was a 1998 Chrysler Concorde, not gold but platinum, thank you very much. I got it because it was great for the hundred mile commute (each way) I was forced to do several times a week. It got double the mileage of any of my last three cars and was almost twice as fast. It, much like my highschool ride, attracted the women. Too bad they were all over 80 and just wanted to know if it came in Perrywinkle. By the time I moved to Northern Virginia, I had tinted the windows. If I drove it fast enough wearing a dark suit, people would think I was the FBI and get out of the way. I donated it to the Salvation Army at 108K miles, still going strong. It was coming up on time to replace the timing belt and I didn’t feel like taking the winter tires off of it. Its probably sitting in a wrecking yard with bullet holes in it and 24 valves sticking through the hood.
My ’06 X OR is my first new car and remains un-named.

Excellent history, Old Army. I love hearing nicknames given to vehicles. I never could come around to naming my Xterra, but our two old VW Beetles are named "Gus" (mine) and "Dory" (my daughter's).

Old Blue......my 1990 GMC Sierra......*sigh* I miss it. (I also had a 2001 Chevy Cavalier coupe that was super cool)...traded it and sold the truck to get my '05 Xterra. PS. The cap was only on it for that day (wasn't even FOR a GMC) cuz I brought lumber up to my friend's cabin. I couldn't wait to take it off. Ugly thing!!!

This Honda is definetly the vehicle that I abused the most. I bought it for a measly $3800 from a friend and I drove about 100K miles in almost 6 yrs - mostly commuting to San Jose. List of my abuses: - Drove with only 3 spark plugs connected for 4 months. Mileage went from 26mpg to 12mpg and pure gas fumes were coming out of the exhaust. - I striped the oil drain plug, put some epoxy on it to seal the leaky plug then made a mental note to fix it later. 10 months and some 11K miles later I finally got it fixed and was able to put in fresh oil (boy that old oil was THICK). - I blew out both CV joints from non-maintenance. The mechanic was amazed that I was able to drive at all - cause he said "the driveshaft was gone". - While I had the car, I went thru about 4 different passenger windows. (long stories) In January of 2001 - I traded in this beater for $600 cash toward my new Xterra.

1995 Ford F150 XLT 4x4 -- I will never buy Ford again..
2001 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 LS Ext Cab -- bright red, my favorite truck ever. only sold it because I got a killer deal on the one I have now.
2002 Jeep Liberty Sport -- ew.. all I can say. Graduation present gone BAD!
2001 Chevrolet Silverado Z71 LT Ext Cab -- what I am driving now, I love it but preferred my red one's exterior. I've got every option in it possible so the inside is very nice! I'll keep it for a long, long time. I plan to get an Xterra as a companion to it.

This explains the choice in username: 92 Eclipse - My first official car. I would still have it if it was AWD and Turbo'd 85? Suzuki Samurai - My first experience 4WD - Inspired by a friend who had one and beat the crap out of it. 98 Eclipse - Sold both the 92 Eclipse and Zook to get my hands on something speedy and shiny.. She was pushin 400+ HP after I was done with her and I knew she couldn't handle it much longer without some internal overhauls. The kid who bought it from me blew the headgasket 2 months in.. And now I've got the 2002 SE S/C Xterra. She's a beaut, Clark!

For some reason I just loved the wine of the supercharger so I went with that model (not to mention I loved the wheels). When the Mazdaspeed3 came out I just couldn't pass on it. 260hp/280TQ, 6-Speed, only 5000 made, I just had to have it. It is really an awesome car

Traded Rubicon for '7 OR.
Mostly Harmless, Had an '84 and '87 Mustang GT, but they were basic , stock vehicles. Very nice looking Mazda. My wife and I have had WRX's as well. The last was a '6 TR(2.5 turbo). Did you drive the '6 or '7 WRX before choosing the Speed3? I have read good things about the Mazdaspeed3. Just interested in a comparison as I have never driven one and they weren't available when I got the last WRX. Currently, our local Mazda dealer only has the reg. 3 and 6. What are your impressions? Any negatives to the fwd vs. awd? Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Any negatives to the fwd vs. awd? Thanks for taking the time to respond. The mustang was a beast. The s/c on the stang was pretty much silent so people never knew what to expect. I didn't test drive either of the Subaru's even though that probably would have been a good idea. I always liked the STI but that was another 15K to the price tag. The speed can be a bit much to handle under hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd because you are putting so much HP/TQ to the front wheels but nothing that isn't managable. The car is a beast in 3rd/4th/5th/6th. I have no problem passing in traffic in 6th gear. The handling is very tight and even going around corners at high speeds the car stays flat and feels very stable. I brought the speed because it was cheap (through someone I know I got it for $21,500), limited production run (call me vain), dub as the fastest FWD production car (call me vain again), its pretty much a sleeper (if you don't know what to look for you will mistake it for a regular 3 hatch) and because I giggled like a school girl when I test drove it. I will be honest with you, I have had the car for about a month now and it is still nothing but a blast to drive. The interior feels like a much more expensive car. I actually look for excuses to go drive it.
