In Holland, there are ferries that are often faster than commuting over bridges. They let any vehicle with an engine under 126cc on. Most of them are free. So, to cross the Ijselmeer at 17:00, you're on board with a melée of pedestrians, bicycles, small scooters, cargo trikes, and ultra micro-cars like the Willam City:
Under 126cc vehicles are also allowed on the designated "bike lanes" of Holland, which are essentially bike paths because they are isolated from the rest of traffic, have their own stoplights, etc. These cars are seriously small, though. They make Smart cars look like Escalades.
If I could drive one of these 100 mile per gallon things down a bike path, I'd totally buy one. I live and work next to the LA River, one of the few bike paths in Los Angeles. If I could commute the thing in a micro-car, or hell, even a moped, I'd be stoked!
