poorboy, ekh, nolarocks, todrick,

Did any of you took your X out on a camping trip yet? I will be doing a camping trip soon with my friends in a month or so to Enchanted Rock, some TX state park somewhere S or SW of Austin.

What were your experiences? Did your X do okay? I will not encounter snow that's for sure, unless some cold front comes through in March!

If you're sleeping in it and your over six feet, put your head near the rear and the feet between the front seats.

I've only heard great things about Enchanted Rock, haven't gotten to go there yet though.
I haven't gotten to take a camping trip yet, but planning to very soon, let us know how it goes, maybe I'll go there. It looks great

Enchanted Rock
I was bored and folded the seats forward and all that, but I put the back seat bottoms kinda over the front seats laid down, and it worked pretty well... at least I think that's what I did... I did that a couple of months ago.
aaaaanyways, enjoy.

also dont forget if you sleep in the X... use your key fob to unlock the doors BEFORE opening them in the middle of the night to get out and pee... otherwise your neighboring campers will be jarred from sleep by your alarm.

didn't happen to me but it has happened to a few people

Guilty of that twice at least! laugh

I sleep with my head near the front, seat cushions left at home, and feet at the rear door corner to corner. I'm 6'4" and have just a little room to stretch!

Hey YellowX,

Had mine out this weekend as a matter of a fact. We were fully loaded in the back with 2 8" telescopes and tripods. 2 tents/sleeping bags. 2 foldup card tables and 2 coolers. 1 for beer and one for everything else. Oh and a small Honda generator. Got to have good power for the scopes.
I also loaded the roof basket, Yakima in the rear with all the optics cases and cammera cases. I also had a 5 gallon gas can on there as well. The poor old X was low in the ass from all this stuff but performed great. I also had 4 people in the truck. We were in an area called Black Rock St. Park. As we had a permit from the St. we were able to use the fire trails to gain back country access. Much to my surprise the roads/trails were in worse shape than I expected. Frankly I was concerned in some spots but the X did great. Would have done better with other tires. As an aside we got some great astrophotos, nice and dark up there now. No campers or scout troops. Load up the back and watch the underside clearences. Spot well if you can and you should be fine. Have a great time.

Ekh.

YellowX, check out our club site and our previous trips. You should join us on our next Xcursion too. We have 4X2's with us all the time. http://www.swxc.org Better yet join the club. I had an 00 4X2 for a year and did one heck of a lot. I have been to enchanted rock many times and no sweat.

Oh yea, check our posts here on XOC too.

My wife and I are wanting to take our X out camping this summer. Anyone have any ideas on how to find a nice, fairly secluded, place to go that the 4x2 will handle -with an X newbie behind the wheel? We are in the Olathe, KS area.

Try Clinton State Park (Lawrence), Hillsdale (South of Paola), Perry (just north of Lawrence), Smithville, or, if you like flyfishing, Bennett Spring State Park (MO) is fun.

Or you could call Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, they could give you some ideas.

Anywhere in the Kansas City area is not going to be secluded (or scenic).

All of the aforementioned Lakes have good access roads, 2WD will be fine (provided it hasn't rained too recently).

Or, you could hook up with HXOC, i'm sure one of those guys could point you in the right direction.

Has anyone bought the camping tent "add-on" for the
X... Just curious to see if it performed well enough...

It looks like a POS so I built my own. I first made a "tailgate" that mounts on to the bumper, then I sewed together a tent of my own. The whole thing gives me considably more space, plus I now have a tent with a view of the stars. I'm going to Big Sur this weekend, and will take some pics of it set up.

I go out camping along the Red River (TX/OK) about once a month. Works great. When my wife comes along, we sleep in the back of the X. Fairly comfy, at least better than sleepin on rocks.
