Has anybody tried to have an aftermarket sunroof installed in their new X? I can't find anybody who is willing to do it. They are all scared to touch it for whatever reason...

You Need three items.
1. Sturdy Roof Rack. ie. Thule or Yakima
2. Sturdy Downhill Bike. ie. Kona, Intense, Ellsworth.
3. Low railroad bridge.
Mix at High Speed.

HA! that wouldn't be a sun roof, that would be convertible - or should I say converted ...speaking of... I already have AZ Pin Striping on the roof cargo box from going under a tree - putting effort into not doing that again - - -

There are several mods on the earlier Xterras where the basket was removed and the front air shield was retro-fitted with a plexiglass or similar clear material, thus allowing a view of the sky through the factory sunroofs. I don't see why this couldn't be done on the new gen X.

It might be possible, but don't know how easy it would be to remove it. Is it welded on or just screwed on? And the basket/roofrack is such an integral part of the X's appearance, I can't imagine how funny it would look without either one. Come to think of it, I think it would be good for a laugh to actually see one without its roofrack/basket. Anyone got any pics?

Uhm, the basket comes out with an easy four-screw removal. I haven't had a basket on our ’05 Xterra for a year now since the light bar mounts in the same holes that the basket used to reside in. I think a sunroof could be done by an aftermarket manufacturer fairly easily. I was actually looking into a folding rag-top sunroof like this Frontier LINKY

While I like that Frontier rag top, it still would be nice to have clear sunlight pour through without having to open the top. Alas, maybe it's not meant to be with the 2nd gen X. One thing I do think would be nice with the 2nd gen (or even 1st gen) would be a rear (behind passenger) moon roof option. This obviously would be a problem because of the way the sholder harness mounts into the ceiling - so again probably not possible on the current 2nd gens. Maybe Nissan will revisit the design for the 08 model and offer a seat mounted sholder belt and then a rear sun roof as an option.
