#527489 - 20/03/06 03:17 PM Strange Noise--alternator or torque convertor??

My 06 X has about 900 miles on it now. I am hearing a "nasal" whirring/whining noise under the exhaust noise. This happens when I start the vehicle, but is most pronounced from a standstill through fourth gear upon acceleration (it's an automatic). Is this normal? It sounds like either a bad/overworking alternator, or a problem with the torque convertor. Thoughts?? confused

Maybe a vaccuum hose? Since it's under warranty, just drop by the dealer. They can usually do an alternator check in about 10 minutes.

Thanks guys. My local stealership is worthless. I had them look at it and they proclaimed it "normal." WTF? I think that can be translated as "we're parts changers here, not real mechanics." Anyway, my father, who owned his own transmission business for 20 years got out his stethescope and checked it over with me. He swears it's the torque convertor. The problem is, to check that out, you have to drop the entire tranny out. No wonder the stealership doesn't want to touch it.

make them, take it to them, tell them the tranny is making funny noises, and you demand that they fix it.

Thanks. Yeah, I am going to have my father come along this time so he can explain the problem better than I can (and have the authority of also being a mechanic). Even though he's been retired from the tranny business for twelve years now, he still can't go anywhere in this area without someone say, "hey aren't you the guy that fixed my car?" It's kinda funny.

Ive read some older posts on this, similar to a belt screaching noise...turns out to be a mildly common problem and easy fix at the dealer, just run a search or I hope someone else can chime in soon.
