Just a pet peeve about the Xterra and new cars in general. I was raised by southern parents, so I was always taught manners were important.

I'm always opening doors for women, and I always open and close the door for my fiancee when she is riding in my vehicle. But when I looked at the base models of many new cars, they have no passenger door lock.

If you were raised to open the door for your gal, you either leave the car unlocked all the time, spend the extra thousand bucks or so for power door locks and keyless entry, or fork out a few thousand more for a higher trim line.

To me, this is nuts. What good reason is there for omitting the passenger door lock? The parts and assembly in the factory can't be that much.

or just use your key fob to unlock the door before you get to the truck, it will even turn on the interior lights.

Did any of the base-model Xterras, '00-'06, ever come without a key-fob to unlock the doors? Was there ever a model so bare-bones, bottom-of-the-ladder sparse, that it had NO key-fob and automatic locks?

for the '06 models at least, the X trim level is base without power anything, and doesn't even have cruise control. You have to get one with the power package...

so are you saying the vehicle has no outside key-lock then?

I do not like key fob remotes. I do not carry it.

the 4 door auto lock/unlock when keying into the lock manually is great, but saving $3.79 on passenger side locks blows.

nothing worse than your keys in your pocket activating the unlock or panic alarm while you are nearby- not to mention a fat pocket.

I've learned to walk to the back of the X and unlock it from the back hatch rather than walking all the way around.

On the 05's it was possible to get an S model without any power options, but i bet they are hard to find (I have never seen one in person).

The lack of a passenger side door lock provides the Xterra greater theft protection.

Punching the passenger side lock with a screwdriver or knive is a common way for thieves to break into vehicles, especially when they are parked on the right side of the road and the passenger side faces the sidewalk and the scumbag has greater cover/privacy to break in.

Just my 2cents
