I have been trying to find info on straps online without much success. Highland is the brand I have found in stores. Their website shows "tow straps" and "vehicle recovery straps". The tow straps have metal hooks on the end and are rated at 10,000 pounds. The recovery straps have the nylon looped at the ends and are rated at 20,000 pounds. The tow strap would clearly be easier to use but I am worried about safety. Also how long? Walmart has a 20' recovery strap for about $25. I looked at Auto Zone and they wanted $29 and could order a 30 footer for $45. Any recommendations?

Stay away from any strap that has a metal hook on it.. Aside from that.. get a strap that is as least 20 ft long and is rated for 10k and up

http://www.recoverygear.com/ has quite a bit. www.4x4connection has some as well. Get a minimum of 20' by 20,000 lbs. Do not get the ones with hooks on them. There are some other threads on this subject somewhere. It might have been some time ago.

Thanks for the help. I checked out the masterpull site and found their "super yankers" to be more expensive ($67 vs. $45) than the Highland brand straps I have found in stores. Are they worth it?

Much better deal at recoverygear.com. They have a kit with a 30' strap, a 10' tree protector, a couple shackles and gloves for $100. Thanks wqbang.

One recommendation from the peanut gallery. Get a 30 foot strap. Also don't go scrimpy, you need that sucker to get you out of a jam. You don't have to spend more than is necessary, but you will spend around $45 and up for a good strap. Wally World straps are junk. Buy from a reputable off-road store.

http://www.4wheelparts.com has the Canyon Crawler 3x30 straps for about $36 bucks. Used the hell out of one this past weekend and I love it.

I'm buying at least one more. I learned a very simple rule this weekend:

• You cannot own too much recovery gear!

Two straps, two tree savers, as many shackles(big ones) as you can stand to buy, and a receiver ring at a minimum.

When you need to get yanked out of a sticky situation, a $100 bucks of recov gear is much better than several hundred bucks sheet metal damage.
