I just took my studded and siped tires off for the Utah/Colorado/Arizona trip. I put Bfg KOs' on. Question is,.. winter is now back up here ,and I was wondering how the roads are down there. I don't want to have to put chains on as fender clearance is an issue with 32" tires. Driving in the snow and ice is no problem but how often do they require chains down there?

If there is enough snow to require chains, we wont be running any of the trails in Moab that we have planned. They will be unpassable.

Moab should be 60-70 degrees for the week (knock on wood).

You should be fine. Coming from Oregon to SLC I am not sure how bad it could get. Once in Utah you will be going through Spanish Fork Canyon. I have driven it in a 2 wheel drive during a bad snow storm - hairy but not impossible, chains not required. The X should be fine even if there is some snow. Once down (from Helper to Wellington - 10 miles) - DO NOT SPEED! Cops everywhere, that is the town's main source of revenue... haha...

You should be fine. Just watch out for black ice if you drive the canyon at night or below freezing. It is ranked #5 in the nation for most dangerous highways.

Like Ian said, if there is any snow... we will be looking for other trails, but the forecast is optimistic right now.

See ya in Moab!

We (SLC) actually got 3" of snow dumped on us just a few days ago but most of it has already melted away.

Moab is usually 8-10 degrees warmer than SLC so even if the storm got down there it was probably mostly rain, and any snow was probably gone by noon the next day.

Moab probably won't get snow right now and they say its just going to get warmer through the week. smile

If there is snow or not. A/T tires will perform best in Moab. They're better in snow, and perfect for slickrock. Ian will take you on the best trails for the situation.

Have fun!
