If I only had a job!

For those interested that's a great price and the gears are awesome! Totally worth the trouble of installing them!

The Calmini TC Gears was one of the best upgrades I made. Great price. Slow is good.

It took me and MikeV quite some time to get them in but they kick ass! He can crawl right along! Wish I had the $1100 sitting in the bank!

They are nice and slow......

I have had fun with those without gears when I have gotten out of my truck and let it idle along over terrain.

Kind of like: "look ma, no hands" sitting in the open window simply halding on to the steering wheel.

I now would change the series of upgrades to include the gears as an earlier purchase. It is an extremely functional upgrade.

"Finally, a true ROCKCRAWLER Transfer case gear set for for the Nissan Xterra/Frontier 4x4! Our gear set is manufactured in the USA from SAE 8620 alloy bar stock material. For long wear life and operation at high speeds"

Anyone else see the irony here? laugh

Are you talking about "rockcrawling" and "high-speed" ? That does sound funny, but I think it's in reference to rotational speed of the gears, which will be much faster on the lower ratio gears.

I routinely run my Xterra in 5th gear 4LO just to do 10 MPH, and the gears are spinning away.

Another point is that the counter gear and main gear are turning all the time, whether you are in 4WD or not.

All true, which i know. Just the whole high speed and rock crawling didn't quite mesh cool

I also second the whole the X in low sounding like a jetplane when wound out. It isn't particularily loud, but it definitely has a presence laugh

If I did more in the rocks and the geas weren't amos $1k, I'd be all over a set, try to slow this thing down a bit. I play more in the mud so the 2:1's are quite nice.
If I wanna play in the rocks I have my second 4x,
low range 1st gear at redline is about 4.5 mph.

I wheeled with some Sami's 2 weekends ago. They had the low gears(not CALMINI) and big tires. Kinda funny watching them try to do the hill climbs on ice and foot deep snow. Obviously not what they are geared for. One of their tattle-tale tachs got to 7500 rpm's on a mildly built 4 squirrel. Amazing the thing only overheated.
Can't wait for warm temps and "normal" wheeling.
I learned that TJ's have a rev limiter at around 5300 RPM's. [Freak]

So what is the difficulty rating for installing these gears?

I've done pretty much everything on my X myself. Sus lift, body lift etc...

special tools? Or is this something you want someone else to install?

Thnx

If you can get the transfer case out and back in, the heavy stuff is out of the way. Once it's out, you need to open the case and do some grinding. Installation of the gears themselves is very straightforward.

You can download the instructions from the CALMINI web site and look through them for more info.

It is a do-it-yourself job. Just make sure you have access to a machine shop or automotive place that can press off and on a gear on the shaft.

Make sure you drain all the oil out of the tranmission (At least on the manual) before you remove the transfer case too!
