Sweet! Yor new plates have arrived around here already, I got a call from one guy today who said they just arrived. BTW Jim, my Bud's with these new Gen X's need rear diff covers for the hybrid D-44's. I'm thinking DOM tube with tabs that match the existing bolt holes, or maybe just a new thicker plate with peel off protection? Whatcha think?

Yeah I guess we need to do that, had a few requests. A cover is definitely the way to go.

Mine arrived today. Jim was not kidding when he said sending them unpainted would allow him to "just slap a label on and ship". Talk about minimalist packaging (4 bare plates with labels stuck to them), but they look fine. Hopefully the mounting hardware box will arrive in a day or so.
Next step: clean, prime and paint.

How hard is that outside tank skid bracket to get on? It looks like you need a double jointed wrist. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

How much does the set weigh (what was the typical shipping weight)? individual weights?
probably the stock pieces weigh about 15 lbs combined.

Mike,
I think the shipping charge was around $140.00, and I'm in San Diego. Coincidentially, I think the weight is around 140 pounds.
They went on without too much trouble, there was a little bit of jostliing and cursing, but not much. Contrary to what Nick at Shrockworks told me, I did have to remove that front factory "plate" that goes from the back of the bottom of plastic at the center of the bumper to the frame. There is now just an open space and the oil filter is visible. I may try to cut up the old plate and find a way to put it back on until Shrockworks finishes a real front plate. Other than keep out mud and brush I am not sure that thing did much good anyway. I've already had to have it pounded back into shape as it was rubbing against the front sway bar after taking a bit of a hit.

Just to avoid any confusion....That diff skid is not ours.
We will have a replacement heavy duty Differential Cover out in a 3-4 weeks. The cover is the only area that's vulnerable. The outside ring will be 3/8" steel, so it will not ever peel back the way the one in the pics above did. The cover portion is 1/4" steel, so if you back into something, you will not dent the cover into the ring gear.
With this approach you also loose no ground clearance at what is already the lowest point of the vehicle.
Havent decided what to do on the non D44 axles. Probably a cap that will require some minor/quick welding.

Isn't the only real problem WITH the D44's anyway? The HB's are already pretty damn tough. (I agree about the ground clearance, that A/C skid is way too bulky, and will catch on things that WOULD have cleared the OEM axle. Maybe if the A/C reversed the bolts, so that the "U" was down, and the threads were up, so nothing would protrude down, a round profile under the axle could be fit, and the horizontal brace could then be stepped in, closer to the axle/diff lines?) So, Jim, I think your D44 solution would be less expensive and work better than the above, but I don't think you NEED a diff skid for the non -D44's.

I don't care for AC's skid. I hope Jim's solution is better. Besides, I like spending money on Jim's stuff anyhow...

I just checked, shipping to my house in San Diego was only $92.00. Not sure how the $140 amount found its way into my brain, but is was definitely an error on my part.

Jim, Got my tracking numbers today, thanks. Question on that radiator skid for those of us without your bumper, will it have the laser cut Shrockworks logo in it?

Jim, Just my 2 cents but, I'd rather see you develop a rear skid. Noone can deny they eat up ground clearance (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch) depending on design. But, I think it's just as difficult to deny that they better protect the diff than simple covers. Covers are great on front ends but, skids work better on the rears. And, I'm certain however you'd design it, it'd be better than what's available currently.

Originally posted by xtatik: ....But, I think it's just as difficult to deny that they better protect the diff than simple covers. Yeah but the bottom of a rear diff doesnt need protecting! It's 1/2" thick cast STEEL. It's stronger than a skid plate already. You could argue that a little xtra protection "can't hurt" but it does. It eats ground clearance at the worst possible spot and protects something that doesnt break. The whole concept of a diff skid just makes absolutely no sense to me.

If you do decide to design a stronger cap for the 3rd members, don't forget about those of us running a Ford 9" rear

Hey Jim...
Just wondering if you ever decided to make a decent roof rack for the 05+ X? I saw a post from you back in May where you were soliciting ideas for a better roof rack?
BTW... I'll be ordering your rock sliders soon. One more bag of aluminum cans and I am there! Darn kids and their college expenses.

do you have to remove any of the skids for an oil change or can you get around them. I am just wondering becuase if the bolts get mashed during wheeling and I can't get them off, can i still change the oil?
Thanks Jim, and btw your sliders have done awesome, thanks for the quick ship last march!
