For the holidays, I want to string up Christmas lights on my roof rack. Does anyone know if it's legal to drive around with lit Christmas lights on the truck?

Not sure, but last year we had a Ford Explorer running around St Louis with a short lit up christmas tree on top. And he had Illinois plates on it.

I don't think it's legal (trying to find where it says that) but I don't think cops will mind much. After all, no one really wants to be a cock block on holidays.

Cops here in WIS are cock nuts about anyting ... like the city cops .. they think that they know everything....

they are out to get a boner to pull any SOB over..

other than that why dont you put your lights on the inside of your xterra.. i have a invertor in my xterra so i could go to a pack tailgate party and watch tv or what every b4 the game... that would be cool.....

later you all [Wave] [Wave]

in the state of IL, you are not allowed to have red, clear, blue lights on your vehicle at anytime, especially when driving. trust me i know, and have the ticket to prove it, they say it interfears with emergency vehicles, so if you do it, be very careful.

btw: where abouts in IL are you located

Its true that it is illegal, but as with anything, it all depends on where you live. You would be amazed with what I see driving around the downtown area that the suburban cops would pull over without question. You pretty much have to run someone over before the cops pull you over down here for a traffic/vehicle violation.

I would suggest bringing this question over to the Midwest Xterra Owners club board, someone (I'm thinking Hawk) over there might be able to answer your question.

I just found out that a buddy of mine that is on the CL Police Dept, just moved in behind me a couple months ago! He even has 2 chocolate labs!! Sam was in HEAVEN Erik!!!

I will make a call tomorrow and find out what the law says about it. I think it is illegal. Red, white, and blue lights on the rack are only allowed to be on squad cars. I'll find out if the locals will get a hard on for pulling you over with them on the rack. I want to say, that you probably will be pulled over for lights on the rack. You may consider putting white lights on the rack, but even that may be illegal. May be too distracting.

At any rate, I'll find out tomorrow.....

Well, I talked to a buddy of mine that is a IL State Trooper. He said that as long as it is just Christmas Lights ON TOP of the X, it's perfectly legal. It's when you start putting lights underneath the X that it starts becoming illegal.

Just so you all know [Wave]
