I am planning on installing a CB radio in my X for communication on those long treks on and off road. Where is the ideal place to install a CB on the X? What is the best CB out there, taking in to consideration cost features and quality?

I have a Cobra 75 WX ST. I installed the controller box under the seat. It works well and only took about an hour to install and run wiring. I saw it on the internet for $93 but I couldn't tell you where. I followed Ian's example for the antenna mount and it worked like a dream. The only thing I did different is put a zip tie that is loosened over the antenna so it wouldn't flip up during driving. Go to www.xterrajournal.com it will show you the mount for the antenna.

I personally have a Uniden 68XL, peaked and tuned from www.thecbshop.com. I have a mag-mount K40 antenna right in the middle of my roof...the whip screws off with a 1/4 turn when I dont want it up there. I used to have a peaked cobra 25, and there is no comparison between the new and the old radios. I just got stick on velcro and stuck it right on the middle of my dash. I can still hear the speaker fine, its totally removable if for some reason I dont want it there, and the Uniden is a great radio. I just set the mic right in the little pocket the t-case shifter boot makes when its not in my hand. It may not look factory, but it doesnt look bad, and its a great performer.

hope this helps
Michael

Cobra 75 WXST. Behind the cigarette lighter panel. I ran the cord between the panel and the carpet.

I have a totally custom job I built a few months ago. It is actually a small Radio Shack model that I did a bit of work on. It is a perfect fit.

That's the same place I mounted mine. I almost cut my finger off cutting that plastic, BTW! Anyway, I used a small Cobra radio (DX19 or something?). The Cobra was pretty long and a bit wider than that on, so it sticks out, but it's easier to reach that way anyway. Overall, I'm happy with that spot and how everything fits.

My pictures aren't as good, but you can see it on my Interior Upgrades page at http://aftershockx.1avenue.com
