I need some help, trying to figure out if the X has a (+) or (-) horn circuit? I am also looking for the color code off the steering column before/after the relay, for 2001 V6 XE AT.

I am trying to hook up the horn for an after market alarm.

The horn in front of the radiator has its (-) side grounded. The wiring colors must wait until I get home and crack open the manual.

My manual is for a 2000. Maybe the same?

I'm about to put a second horn on and was just going to go by the directions that came with the horn. I know very little about wiring and if there's something I should know, can you mention it, ElectroKen?

I also installed a second horn. It's very easy. Attach it to the same wires that the original horn is attached to. The stock wiring and horn relay will do just fine.

If I could get the color code, pin and connector number off the smart entrance control unit, it will help a lot too.

I suppose it is +12v right at the smart entrance control.

here is a question/sugestion

You already have 2 horns in Xterra
one is the regular one, which is activated by the button in the stering wheel, and the second one belongs to the alarm.

would it be easier to conect positive wires from regular horn to the alarm horn and they will be working together ?

In fact this will work (at least on a 2000)and harm nothing. Both horns already come on together for the alarm.
I chose to add the second horn to the one in front of the radiator for a couple of reasons. The first was that the theft warning horn is of the typically asian variety which I can't stand the sound of. The "radiator" horn is a trumpet horn. I found the matching "high" horn to the original "low" horn and now the X horn sounds like the '60s horns I got used to in my first 2 cars.

Grounding the red wire (pin 8) on the "Smart Entrance Control Unit" flashes the lights and blows the horns. The aftermarket alarm must be able to sink about 300mA to energize the two relays.

I just got a wiring copy from the dealer. I am wondering if I splice the wire from the after market alarm to pin 5 connector (light green with red wire) of the Theft Warning Horn Relay, will I be ok? Do I still need 300mA? The wire from the after market one supplies a (-)200mA output to lock the vehicle doors and its that same wire I am trying to activate the horn from. Do you think there will be a problem at all?

Do I need to connect a relay or will I be ok with direct splicing/Tapping?

As long as the aftermarket system can sink the 200mA your plan will work just fine. One relay coil works out to around 150mA. If the alarm has a 12V sourcing output another relay will be needed.

Electro Ken,

I am not sure how the honking signal works when locking doors on stock remote but just wondering if there is any posibility I could connect one end of the relay coil input wire to the factory alarm/lock system so that I could get a short honk whenever I lock the doors? the other end of the relay coil input goes to (+)12v line. If it is posible, which wire am I supposed to look for?

I already connected a relay to the Horn line from the after market door lock wire, It works fine except it sends a ve..ry long pulse that made it so irritating to hear the horn go off for good 3-4 seconds. Instead of a short pulse signal it sounded like a theft alarm.

In case if you wondered how I connected the wires:

Pin 85 from the relay goes to door lock line of the after market one.
Pin 86 goes to (+)12v line
Pin 87 goes to ground line
pin 30 goes to the horn circuit

Okay, let me come clean. I got this dixie horn, see. (*Please, no texan comments--I'm a Yankee transplant and I got the horn for Christmas*)

Anyway, I not tapping/sinking with the original horn. I'm using a separate switch. I was just going to go by the directions for the +21V switch.

So, ElectroKen, is there anything else I should take into consideration besides the original directions?

The directions that came with the thing should be fine. That type of horn generally draws much less current than "real" automotive horns.

I built a gadget that generates a horn pulse for lock and unlock button for after market unit using a PIC chip. This chip has to be programmed to turn on the horn relay for a certain number of milliseconds so that the horn will go off for that short duration.

I already tried 500, 250 and 125 milli-seconds. It keeps getting shorter but don't seem to get close to the stock timing yet. I will eventually get it by trial and error but it will help if someone knows the exact timing.

Does anyone know how I can install a louder horn that comes on after about 1/2 a second of holding down the horn? I want to be able to quickly honk with the regular horn, but if I hold it down, I want the louder horn to kick in.

You'll need a gadget similar to the one that Flames whipped up on the coil side of your horn relay. It sounds to me like his device would do what you want with a few code tweaks (HINT).

Yes, I am sure you could be able to do the same task with similar gismo with some code modification so that the second horn relay will be activated after the set time.

I got it, 10ms is about right.

This system is a modification for a Viper or any remote starter for that effect, which doesn't have a horn output and doesn't generate a double pulse to unlock doors.

The gadget, about 3" * 2" in size, uses a PIC Chip to do four things:

1) Sends a single horn pulse of 10ms when doors are locked.

2) Sends a double pulse, 10ms each with 300ms gap in b/n the two horn pulses when doors are unlocked.

3) Generates a double pulse from a single input pulse for door unlock; the first pulse, 500ms long, disarms the alarm and the second one, 700ms, with 200ms gap in between, opens the doors.

4) Does a Re-Arm delay of 2.5 seconds to give enough time for the vehicle to shut down before it can be re-armed. This is for timer mode use. When the starter kicks in, it disables the alarm and when it times out or is shut down using the remote, it re-arms the car.

The problem I had was that the viper starter didn't come with an option to set a delay time for re-arm. It sends a rearm signal automatically when the engine shuts off without giving enough time for the ignition to shut down completely, causing the rearm feature to fail working.

This unit works like a charm, solved all my problems.

Just as a follow-up, Carlton came over about a month ago and we finished up the dixie horn install. Works awesome! My friend who has a suped-up Yukon and who was my dixie horn inspiration came by the last night and we went to a movie and played around on the way there honking our horns and having fun.
