I realized the need for a CB as I am sure most of you have, but the X isn't the easiest vehicle to mount a CB in since there isn't a lot of space under the dash in the foot wells.

If you need a CB, I suggest the cobra 75. All the controls are in the Mic and the mic connects to a small box (about 3x1.5x1.5) which is easy to hide.

I just installed my Cobra 75 tonight in about 30 min. The relay box is installed under the dash behind the ashtray, power is supplied from the cigarette lighter, and I ran the antenna cable down the pillar between the front and back doors on the drivers side. The install was very easy and looks super clean and professional, the best part, I didn't have to cut, drill, or alter any of my trim pannels!

I can't wait to get off road again and try out my new CB.

Blenderhead I installed mine under the driver's seat. I filed off the paint under the carpet and used a screw to ground the CB. I extended the power wire by about 2 feet and ran it to the fuse box and hooked it up to a constant power source. You will need one if you want to use the memory function on the CB. I ran the antenna wire under the door sill to the back of the truck and used Ian's idea for an antenna mount. See his website: http://www.xterrain.com/

I tucked the mic cord under the counsol and just tried to stretch it a little. It works great. I put the mic on the dash like Ian did.

Using a 36 inch FIRESTIK II antenna.

In my Xterra which is a 2000, there is an open spot to plug in a plug at the top right. I used a 12 volt DC Auto Tester to discover which pin was a constant source of power.

I used a blade type connectior to achieve a connection with the pin. You can buy them at auto parts stores. Just a little hint. I wrapped it with electrical tape to stop it from making contact with the neighbor pin.



It is working well. I have driven over 300 miles without a problem.

A convenient place to get unswitched power on a 2000 X is at the power socket relay. This relay is light blue and can be found just above where the parking brake shaft enters the dash. Tap off of the red/white striped wire right at the relay socket. An insulation displacement connector like Radio Shack #64-3052 will work. That red/white wire is fused for 20 amps. The fuse is in the relay box just behind the battery.

I got to answer my own question tonight while installing my Cobra 75.

The answer is NO, this mod does not work for the 2001 system.

I could have screwed up somewhere but I followed Ken's instructions to the letter. I got the Radio Shack #64-3052 connectors and spliced the red/white striped wire. No matter what I did I could not get clean power to the CB, there was too much noise everywhere, including my speakers. I made sure all my splices and grounds were clean by hooking up the cigarette lighter adapter to the power outlet and the thing fired up perfectly with minimal distortion on the audio speakers or other electrical components.

I dont know what the deal is but I just thought I would share. Now, where exactly CAN I get some clean juice for my CB? I am thinking the fuse box but I dont know which pin to hook the blade connector to to get power.

I see a place in the upper middle part of the fuse box with a bunch of thin copper pins sticking out. Two rows, bottom has like 8 of them and the top has something like 3. I think this is the place you are talking about, no?

I didnt want to extend wires to the battery either.

Yes that is what I am talking about. Well, its similar in the 2000. Use a tester to see which one is constant. I tapped in here for power.

Right on! My install was easy as pie, all except for finding the correct source of power.

I removed the seat and that plastic molding held in place with 4 snap screws.

I put the controller box under the seat by pulling up the carpet and drilling small holes for the screws to fit into. There is just enough room for it near the driver's door just to the rear of the large bundle of wire that loops around under the seat. This place is easy to get to and allows for plenty of room for the box under the seat. Once the holes were done I placed the box on top of the carpet and installed the screws.

I then routed the power line under the carpet to the dash area and routed the ground wire back toward the controller box and scraped off some paint and anchored the ground to the body with a screw.

I put the carpet back on top and everything looks professionally done. I replaced the molding and seat and I am good to go.

Ran a wire from the battery for power,
installed the firestick II and cable,
getting ground from the body and
now i have noise when the engine is turned
on. SWR about 1.7

I think my ground is funky as the 75 will
power up with the remote mount system's ground wire not hooked up...

Try to keep your ground wire as short as possible. A long ground wire will sometimes cause engine noise.

I use a non-ground antenna with a Cobra 75 and get 1.2 SWR across all bands.

I know that this sounds strange but
I reset the X computer "removed - battery cable" and the engine/wire noise is gone today, could be just the skip though.

What antenna do you have installed?

I mounted mine this weekend. I stuck it under the center console, mounted to the bottom of the CD holder area under the console. I bored out a hole in the front for the handset connector mount, as I couldn't find a good place that was sano where it wouldn't get banged up, AND be able to be used by both driver and passenger (important for those long trips.)

It's a nice setup and I don't get that annoying handset cable ripping leg hair out problem I used to have. Anybody else experience that?

Now I just need to ground it and attach it to power. Trying to figure out which of the many ways people have done it is best. I am about 4 inches short of the fusebox with the wiring that it comes with. Not sure about the cigarette lighter thing that electroken had suggested on page 1.
