A Colorado4x4.org member posted this photo earlier today. It appears to be the famous Black Bear trail in the San Juans taken sometime in the 1960s. If it is Black Bear then this photo must have been taken before the forest service changed it to a one way trail.

Needless to say I was totally awed at the narrowness of the trail. eek

I feel like my life is in danger just looking at that picture eek

EDIT: Is this really a legit photo or is someone trying to pull a fast one on us? I just can't see how anyone in their right mind would drive that. confused

I was just informed that this photo was used in a Warn Winch advertisement. Has anyone seen that ad?

I'm in disbelief that someone would actually drive that section of the trail. That being said, I'm looking for reasons why this photo would be doctored. laugh

Nice Photoshop job. It was for a Warn ad that said something along the lines of: "At least he doesn't have to get out to lock his hubs"

So you know for a fact that this image was photoshopped?

Photoshopped or not, but it's still scary as shit!

Well, after reviewing the image in detail it does appear to be edited. The Jeep appears to be untouched but the edge of the shelf road seems to be too straight and jagged. It appears that the shelf road was condensed.

I remember that pic from my dad's old offroad magazines he used to get in the 70s. Jeez, looking at it now still makes my jaw drop.

I don't know what photo editing capabilities were like way back then, but if it was edited who ever did it must have been great at their job.

They also used to run a pic of a full-size Blazer hanging from a tree by its winch line.

It's not that narrow anyplace now, although there are a few spots that WILL get your attention.

I'm not buying the authenticity of the photo.

For the passenger side of the mirror to still be out like that given the outcropping that's immediately behind the jeep proves that the right side edge has been doctored in the pic.

I've been down Black Bear three times, and I don't remember any spot on the steps or switchbacks with that steep/tall of a dropoff (on both uphill and downhill sides). The trail has been widened over the years, but it seems unlikely that the pitch of the whole mountain has changed that much. Just my 2c worth, I could be mistaken.

I sure would not want my passenger side wheel on that next little out cropping of rocks he is headed towards :)looks like he would slip off if loose as they appear.

I agree with Dan on a bit like Italian Shelf but this looks way worse if it may be real.

Think about the spotter he'd have to walk the entire way wink smile
