steering fix

A group of us from VA4x4 went up to a trail in the mountains......it sucked. I'ver never had any problems with this trail but I guess yesterday wasn't my day. I was leading the group when I decided to run up a innocent looking hill. After going up it and turning left to follow it when I realized that there was a big rut on the left side. Well as soon as I saw it the truck dropped in it and leaned way to the left. My meter was jumping between 40 and 45 degrees. So I decided I wasn't in the mood to roll down the hill so I backed out of it. I guess because of the off camber situation and the hard turning, I popped the tierod end apart. Luckly enough there was a pulloff right there so we backed me in there and got to work. One of the new members was kind enough to drive me all over the place looking for tierod end. But to no avail. Thats when we decided to ratchet strap the knucke straight and head back down the mountain. I tell you one thing.....steering with one wheel is challenging. I put my half bald spare on cause I didn't want to screw up my new tires. All in all it went fairly quickly. About 2 miles of rock terrain in less than hour. Unfortunatly when we got it to the road I found out from my road side service would pay $200 of the tow bill but no one would take me home for less than $600 So it sat on the road tell I went back today and trailered it home. I'll pick up the part tomorrow and be on the road by noon. Suck ass part is I just got an aligment friday . The pics

Yeah, sounds like a sucky ass day, that's for sure. I've seen this happen before and that's what made me carry two spare tie-rods with the adjustors and the ends.
I didn't mean to rub it in, man. At least you made it off the trail.

You know it never dawned on me that I would do anything crazy enough to break those tierods. As you can see my adjusters are way beefy. But I'll be heading out today to buy a replacment and 2 spares

ShoX,
I was at shoecreek on the 4th. That same exact small f**king hill broke my driver's side axle(half shaft) and blew out my Warn Hub. I feel your pain.

First off I bought spares today, and the 4x shop I bought the kit from hooked me up since I was the first one in 2 years to break it.
And Mecarp thats why I backed out of it. I knew I was going to roll or break something. Fuck that hill.

good learning experience.
Those of us who have been doing this for years have developed quite the inventory of on board spare parts. Also consider carrying a spare motor mount, alternator, Tbar anchors, a halfshaft, a hub, along with the tools to replace these parts. Duct tape and bailing wire never hurt either. I carry all this junk in a big ammo can in my Frontier.

I'm an extreme pack rat, but I just didn't have a Tie-rod end.....with th size of them I figured I didn't need them. But I have been humbled.

I find if I carry all the spareparts and tools I'd like to, the X weighs so much that I'm more likely to break stuff...so I have to carry more stuff to fix that stuff too.
