Well, we got 4x4 because it's a good thing to have when you wake up to 6 inches of freak snow. Plus getting out to the slopes and whatnot; makes life a little easier.

It's a truck. 4x4's are trucks, 4x2's are testosterone sucking mini vans.

THATS MORE LIKE IT! I can smell the testosterone coming off the board As a former Montero enthusiast(ok, I still am also, but they are no longer made) I still remember when after decades the introduced a 4x2, and how bewildered everyone was. It was not more then a year or two after before the board was flooded with "why did I make that mistake" or " No one will buy my used 4x2 suv" or "how do I convert to 4x4". Even a Subaru is 4wd, and it does not go off-road. I think there should be no 4x2 suvs, for brand image, and no open rear diff trucks, also for image of the line. Bottom line, if you dont need a 4x4, get something more compatable, with better gas milage. Dont think a 4x2 will handle your " light duty" wheeling, because that will get you stuck. You quickly learn without that 2,000.00 or about 35.00/ month for 60 months, that no front tire turning means no go under the most light duty conditions. Not only that, the truck goes from being an incredible highway/ snow cruiser, to a dangerous rear wheel drive vehicle. Makes no sense. Sorry to insult 4x2 owners, but this is how most here will see it. Everyone makes mistakes Except me of course

4x2 as the most offroading I do is on the gravel shoulder of the road to the never ending gas fill ups at the Exxon.

You 4x4 Nazis - who say 4x2 = - are a riot. Half of you have probably never even had a real occasion to put your truck in 4WD. Try something novel...like logic. Read this thread and you'll see responses that fall all along a continuum. At one end are those who obviously need 4WD - people who live in the North with snow, or the mountains, or are die-hard rock-crawling off-roaders. At the other end are those who live in a warm climate with flat topography, who definitely DON'T need 4x4. And the rest fall somewhere in between. That's why it's an option, Einsteins. Besides, a well-driven 4x2 can go ALMOST anywhere you're going in 4WD anyway. And BTW...my guess is that you guys who are always screaming at anybody you disagree with are probably buying your underwear from Victoria's Secret.

It's true: Me thinks you doth protest too much! Most of the people who claim other people are gay...well, they are usually the ones with "hidden" homosexual urges.
Go drive your 4x4; grab a beer; and hang out with the guys. I'll have some wine; take my wife for a ride in the 4x2; and go see a Woody Allen movie.

An open diffed 4x4 has a chance to go some places, if it has big tires, but that requires full throttle abuse. Try a trail sometime. As far as most of us never using 4x4? Hmm, mine had 800 miles on it when I ran 4+ rated trails in Moab, and there were dozens of others along. And so what if I buy my underwear from Victoria's Secret? Dont be offended, but I am curious after that last post. How many 4x2 owners are liberal Vs conservative?

But next time I'll definitely go 4x4. But they better fix the damn look they put on the '05's before I do 'cause I just hate the way they flared the fenders. I can't even explain it, but I don't like the '05 look!

Here we go....I think this Thread turned into a "4x2/4x4 War"...my 1st X was a 4x2, and no way these things can go anywhere a 4x4 can go...I can atest to that...I've gotten stuck Mucho times, that I got fustrated and traded it in for a 4x4 X...This thing Rocks...

Most of the people who claim other people are gay...well, they are usually the ones with "hidden" homosexual urges. Uuhhh, yeah. That's Jeff, he's not really hiding anything... He's alright though, he knows why he bought a 4wd.

I have had this crazy 4x2 to 4x4 idea going on in my head but only really as a pipe dream but fill me in on the details if you don't mind! Any pics??? What you find is the number parts you would have to buy, the custom fabbing of stuff, entire differential replacement, on and on and on...costs generally run too high to be practical, I would guess 10-15K would get her done on an X Better to just learn your lesson, get what you can out of the 4x2 and pick up a 4x4 when you can. And dont feel silly, this question must get asked a 100X each month in 4x4 magazine letters to the editor, and they usually print one response regularly. It would seem reasonable.....

But it would have been pointless to make it "just" a 4x4. The red text in my signature is a hypertext link to my website and plenty of pictures.
