My little webserver is underused, and sitting on a semi-fat T1 line at work, so I figured I could offer some space and bandwidth to you Xterra owners who wanted to share your pics or videos with the rest of us. It's real simple, use the following user/password to connect to my site via FTP, and the images can be linked to or viewed by the following URL. http://superjens.com/xterra/YOUR-IMAGE.DUH The "YOUR-IMAGE.DUH" of course is your image, like "redtruck.jpg" or "roadkill.gif" etc. Use an FTP program or do it manually, or just use IE if you know how, and connect to my site with the following username and password. Upload your image and knock yourself silly sharing your one-of-a-kind pictures with us. Then we'll make fun of you for your stickers and bush bars and speedometer pictures of you going 100 mph and everybody will have a good time. address: ftp.superjens.com user: xterra password: xterraNote that once you upload an image, you can't delete it or modify it. If you want something changed or deleted, send me email. And I guess I have to actually say it, please only use this for XOC related things ok? No warez, no porn, and no crap from any of you or I'll just shut it off, easy as that. I could also set up individual usernames and passwords for everybody, but that smacks of effort and I'm lazy so you can all share the same account for now. Jens

Argggggg... Seems as though webphotos has followed the path of photopoint and has shut down as well. I'm currently linking photos from my MSN communities page... it's working so far...

I don't understand why so many of you have difficulty finding a place to post your pictures. You can find many ISP's that furnish you with a place for your own website when you subscribe with their service. I have www.swbell.net and have 2MB of my own free webspace. Don't hang on to a bad Internet service provider. If they won't provide you with your own private webspace, go to one that will. Check around, there are many of them.

Halfway true. My server is using my company's backup T1 line, which we haven't been using for anything until now. Traffic has grown to the point where we're going to start using it, and I didn't want my little server hogging up the bandwidth we'll need. I was considering moving it to a pay-per-use webhosting service, but came to the realization that even if I keep pumping out 1 GB per day (which I am now) that still doesn't amount to a hill of beans compared to our total possible 1-GB per day. How do I end up pushing 1 GB per day? Some of these pictures and videos that I'm hosting end up being linked to from other sites, while Xterra Owners Club is the biggest traffic generator (50,000 referrals in 80 days), the sum of all the other referrals is twice that. What I'm going to do is put a cap on my server's uploading speeds -- right now it's (theoretically) 1.5 Mbps (T1 speed). I'll reduce it to less than half, which is still more than enough to get out pics and videos etc. Secondly I'm going to work on an ISAPI script that prevents referrals (linking) from sites other than XOC, Automotive Forums, and a few other Xterra related things. This should prevent gross overuse of bandwidth, while still letting me do something I think is a lot of fun -- helping everybody out by having a place to host images and videos. By the way, anybody know how to tweak ISAPI scripts? If you're not sure, you don't. If you do know how, I have an easy favor to ask, inquire within!

SuperJens, why don't you just slap in one line that checks the referrer... If it's not from XOC, ditch the connection - or display a nice, "not gonna happen" page.
Failing that, disallow video. Or cap the sizes.
Slowing down the connection does work, but it just means your server will be busy, longer.

Slowing down the connection does work, but it just means your server will be busy, longer. It's not all that busy, there aren't thousands of hits per second to worry about. However, when there's somebody sitting at home with a cable modem pulling files down at 150 KB/s, this puts a strain on the whole network that should not be eminating from this server. I'll have clients screaming that their file transfers are too slow, which is not a good thing. why don't you just slap in one line that checks the referrer... If it's not from XOC, ditch the connection - or display a nice, "not gonna happen" page. I want to keep the site as open as possible for every Xterra owner. If you have a personal web page with pics of your truck, that kind of thing, this is what my server is here for. Like I said I like helping out other Xterra owners, this is one way I can. To give you a better example, somebody posted that taco_wreck.wmv video, links propagated to every corner of the internet like you wouldn't believe. I'm not willing to sit here hosting crash videos for some rice burner forum, but I left it up anyways (the internet's attention span, as I've noticed, is about 3 days). Those 3 days were really heavy and potentially slowed down traffic to Xterra pics/vids. There are ways around this, the ISAPI script being one of them. The other would be to rename a highly-linked file (which would quickly thwart outside links) and just recreate the shortcut in the appropriate thread here for us Xterra folk to continue downloading it. Jens

Sorry Superjens, that was me that posted that taco_wreck video. I did it as a warning to other XOCers as to the idiots we share the OHV's with. I didn't intend it to bog down your server with all sorts of alien hits. I am sorry about that. I figure you can remove it now, since I am sure the traffic has died down to almost nothing (on that video).
