I was commenting with my family that in the last few years I have noticed a new trend in attitudes toward hispanics. Previously we were generally ignored by popular and political culture. Now there seems to be an increasing presence of our culture in American society as a whole. Major political issues are centered around us and we have politicians clamoring for our votes. Our presence in the entertainment sector has been steadily increasing, which we all know sets the tone for society as a whole. Seems like we are now in a situation where we are either liked or disliked but no longer ignored.
Now this does not come as a surprise to me. I live in a town that is 80% hispanic so trends happening in American culture have been present here since forever. It seems to me that there is a new paranoia about "losing" the country. Attitudes that were directed at other minorities are now centered on us. Well let me tell you that you should be afraid.
My father calls it the retaking of our land. Now instead of doing it by military means we are doing it with our educated people. That's right it isn't the poor families in the slums you should be worried about it is families like mine that are a threat. Where every member has at least a bachelors degree. We are taking your white collar jobs thereby taking positions of influence in your society. We speak a minimum of 2 languages each fluently. Our children will be harder to identify as mexican so you might just give that job to someone with brown in their blood. The day is not far where you will be cutting my grass. Sleep well.

Its too bad that for now you are the exception, not the rule. You probably live a life within the law. You went to school, got an education. Worked hard to get where you are within the system of this great land. But it is people like you who piss me off more than anything. I could care less who comes to this country as long as it is done legally within the bounds of our laws and statutes. There is no racism in that statement. It is simply the way it should be. What we are losing this country to, is a culture of lawlessness and entitlements. Dont let your Hispanic heritage blind you to the fact that illegal immigrants come from all countries. They are called illegal because they broke the law. If you haven't broke the law I have no problem with you. If they came here legally more power to them. But what I do not understand is why you dont have a problem with illegal immigration? It seems you have a chip on your shoulder a mile wide. I have no problem dealing with any educated, intelligent person who pulls thier own wieght. I do have a problem with being taxed for free health care and welfare so that someone who broke the law can live better than me. And one more thing, what do I have to be afraid of? Are you planning on breaking any laws or violating my rights? You strike me as more racist than normal. Someone with "brown in thier blood"? I could care less if you were orange and purple if you were qualified and did things the right way. Isnt "cutting your grass" perpetuating a stereotype? Maybe if you stopped whining about it and started to realize that illegal immigration affects us all, black, white, brown, yellow. You wouldnt be so angry and racist towards the rest of us. I am going back to bed.

It kinda had a racist vibe to it.

Ohh sheesh wow this is funny That was a joke right....right WOW its people like you that make the KKK seem reasonable sometimes. Retaking of your lands, your joking right. Wow you see here it is people the militant idiots with college educations (college dont mean smart nor does it mean educated)
What you need to understand is the majority of America doesnt mind hard working mexican/canadian/european/WHOEVER coming into this country to work as long as they are legal.
Oh and besides the fact that a GOOD large percentage of the mexican population in the south, is involved in gangs and drugs AND smuggling of illegals, Doesnt really help your cause all that much.
imcase i got nothing against you personally however i do have something against your militant attitude. If it was a joke than good if not than you need to re-evaluate. Id hate to have to defenstrate you for no reason what-so-ever.

(I)imacsae why are you so bitter? Is there a particuar reason why you have such a gigantic chip on your shoulder? The foundation of positive immigration is intergration not segregation.
If you want to call yourself an American and make a contribution to the country that you live in so be it. Why must the successes or failures of a particular culture fall under the banner of a foreign country? Did the Mexican education system allow you the chance at a higher education?
Did the Mexican government provide you with the lifestyle that you currently enjoy? No. You are an American of Mexican herritage. You are no longer a Mexican, unless of course for some idealistic reason you carry Mexican citizenship.
As long as minority cultures continue to stand under banners like "brown pride" and insist on standing out from the crowd they are perpetrating the same racism that they decry.
Your blood isn't brown, it's red. Just like everyone elses.

Have to agree with MB on this one. It's the constant search to always find a way to bring race into an argument that's bleeding this country and giving me gas. I prefer to look at it as those who contribute to society vs. those who don't. :p

A Good percentage? I strongly doubt that. Geez there are so many of us down here that if we controlled that much money then we would already own the government. I mean come on a campaign contribution is just a thinly veiled bribe.
Socal I am not an american of mexican descent I am a mexican living in america. My father works for the mexican government and he paid for my school so yes the government did provide for my higher education. As well as that of my brother and sister. All of my families income until graduating college has come from mexico thereby providing our lifestyle. So what is your point.
Oh and I would never ally myself with any militant hispanic organizations. They are counter productive. You are right that integration is the way to resolve conflict. There is no point trying to change a society from the outside. The key is to enter the society and form it to your needs.
Oh and "Bitter?" Are you kidding me I am one of the happiest people you will ever meet.

I used to love going to my friend's uncle's house, drinking mass quantities of Negro Modelo, playing pool, and listening to his old ass grandpa play the squeeze box. If you get here legally and become a citizen you are my brother. America has and always will be filled with diverse cultures. It is whay makes our society great.

My mistake. At first I thought you were an educated immigrant who believes that social change is happening and wants to be a part of it. Now I see that you are just a social elitist who recieved an American education who doesn't understand the culture he is a part of because he is isolated in a border town while becoming increasingly detatched from the country he came from.
Again. My apologies.
It's good to see that you are so proud of the Mexican government. The same Mexican government that was run by a dominant and often corrupt PRI since it came into power at the end of the 20's. The same Mexican government that has had to repeatedly restructure their police force and millitary due to contunuous corruption.
The significant obsticles Mexico has to overcome concerning health care, education as well as quality of life issues are not going to be solved by increasing the number of Mexican people into the U.S.
Having more Mexicans in the US is not going to keep dogs from crapping into and kids from playing in the water suppy in Mexico City. The U.S. has gone over and beyond the call of duty in supporting Mexico and supporting Fox in his reforms.
In return we get increased demands from Fox in how many people we are supposed to allow to emigrate, demands on how immigrants should be treated and the expectation of amnesty for anyone that is able to cross the border.
NAFTA has taken a significant number of jobs away from Americans and taken those jobs, along with significant U.S. investment across the border. Resorts like Cancun, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas are beiing infused with American capital that is providing jobs and an improved quality of life in those areas.
The Mexican reliance on the U.S. for aid and investment is extrordinary. So why don't you look in your own backyard. Why aren't you taking your education and success across the border to help make your country a better place to live?
Why, because you realize that the quality of life and the opportunities for a succesfull life are here. That's why you probably chose to stay in the U.S. to attend college. You understand that the importance of education is much higher here and thusly there is a vastly superior educational system.
The importance of education is not as culturally important in Mexican culture as putting in a hard days work. Mexans aren't coming into this country to take high tech and high income jobs, they are coming in to take shit jobs, the jobs that a lot of Americans don't want to do.
And good for them. The life that they are able to carve out here from an 8 dollar an hour job is a hell of a lot better than the cardboard house with the dirt floor and the dollar a day job they left behind. They are able to have a decent place to live, clean water, clean streets and good schools for their kids.
Oh yes, schools. As a husband of a teacher in a Compton elementary school, what I see and hear about is a struggle first hand. First of all over half the entire school district in Compton is hispanic. 99% of all the kids in the district are on free lunches and breakfast programs. They are poor, they are from blue collar families and their parents work hard.
Most of the parents speak minimal or no english. They don't attend parent teacher's conferences, they don't help their children with their homework. Not because they don't want to or don't care, but because they themselves don't understand the language or the material. For the most part the disciplin problems that she deals with are far and above what she would find in a less depressed climate. And there is hardly ever any follow through from the parents even in repeated discipline issues.
Of course there are some kids that are able to rise above their station in life and show promise, work hard and have supportive parents that truly understand the value of education. But they are the exception rather than the rule.
What does this all mean? Well, just having vast sheer numbers of people here doesn't mean a damn thing. Realizing the importance and value of education, fitting within the structure of the system, looking beyond the here and now and looking at making a lasting contribution have got to be goals of Mexican immigrants before any "revolution" takes place.
Once Mexico becomes a place that people don't want to excape from to realize the American Dream but a place where their citizens want to live because it is a great place to earn a quality living and educate their children you will see your revolution.
Until then, Mexico will still be viewed as merely a source of cheap labor for American business on both sides of the border. A nice place to visit but no one really wants to live there.

imacsae.... I guess I was wrong about you. I think you are somewhat of a racist. I'm sure when you get together with your Mexican buddies the racism flows. When around whites you probably put up a facade and are on your best behavior. My father calls it the retaking of our land You know what? Your father sounds like a real jerkoff. I'm sure he is a racist. It's not his land or your land. Plus if he works for the Mexican government he is also a corrupt socialist. No one abuses Mexicans more than the corrupt Mexican government. Tell your father from me he can go Fuck himself. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

We took the rest of the country from the indians and gave them the "blessing" of Oklahoma, where nothing can grow in the soil...
We took Texas from the Mexicans and put up a barrier that they now run, jump or swim through to get back to their land.
But you know what? That's history. If everybody stayed where they came from or had been routed out of, we'd all live in the middle east...
so all of this "us," "we," "them," BS...it needs to stop. America's borders, for the moment, belong to America. If they're not a CITIZEN of the US, then they need to go back to where they came from. It doesn't matter what RACE they are...I don't give a crap if they're British, Spanish, South African, Portugese, Russian, Saudi Arabian, Mexican, Canadian, or any other country. If they're not a citizen of the US, or are not willing to go about obtaining legal status as an American, then POOMP! Punt them back. But this taking over the country threat crap you're spewing. Forget about it....

Wow you guys call me the racist when you are the ones that take it to that level. Anyway I was only partially joking in my original post. I have noticed a trend lately that focuses on the hispanic component of the U.S. I do feel that for the first time ever hispanics are aknowledged as a real part of the culture. I actually have always joked about mexicans taking over. The truth is that society and culture will change over time as those with differing backgrounds gain positions of influence. I truthfully have felt a backlash coming for many years now. As any new component in society spreads there are inevitably those who have a problem with it. Socalpunx really had some good points in his post. Many Mexicans living in this country have had trouble adjusting and have distanced themselves from their own culture. It is sort of a catch 22 of my generation. We are not from here but we tend to identify with the society in which we were raised. I posted the grass cutting comment and the be afraid one as a dig to bring in some discussion. As Sd-xterra pointed out I do this from time to time for my own amusement. NYMADMAN I respectfully ask you to refrain from insulting my father and keep your comments centered on me. Although since you don't really know him or me your comments are unfounded and unimportant. I mean come on it is silly to call me a racist. I love everybody. Especially white chicks. Oddly enough living in a city that is 80% hispanic my best friend is an irish guy. Anyway the point is that there definitely exists a paranoia that what I alluded to in my original post is actually happening. That minority groups in some way are plotting to take over the country. This of course is ludicrous. The country is made up of those who live in it so you can't take over something you are a part of. Oh and if you notice I never brought in the discussion of illegal immigration that was you guys. Get with the program guys if we can't joke about these issues then they become to large to deal with.

I always get to the party too late  I posted this about 5 hours before Ivan had his rant- Down here the blue hairs and , mexicans are what cause the traffic problems. Ivan's not a rascist, he don't even drive a fast car. If I'm not wrong he's in fact a chicano. Mexican born in America. What I meant by my comment was that AZ has a real immigration problem and the people I'm referring to have no F-ing idea of proper, safe, driving how-to.They're totally clueless. Get off Ivans ass, he's probably just had to much tequila.

What a trooper. All those oranges you had to sell, the miles and miles of grass you had to mow, to afford a college education. And here you are using the internet to swear at people in Mexican. I love this country. Way to go Igor, er, Ivan.

See I think it's a good thing. You can now go to work Ivan and pay taxes while us white folk sit on our ass, get arrested and bitch about how our culture is not respected, and we are oppressed.
I can't wait to be a minority, I already have a list of racist assholes to sue.

""Oddly enough living in a city that is 80% hispanic my best friend is an irish guy. ""
Now see this is a double standard. If some poor white cracker said that, "I have a friend who is black/mexican" There would be an uproar.
Oh you got a friend who is black, huh? And I suppose we all look alike to you too?
Now go wash my car.

This makes me think of when I was in construction, and most of my crew was Mexican, and they didn't hardly speak any english... They would get mad at me because I didn't want to learn spanish, and I'd get pissed at them cuz they were just dumb, oops... cuz they couldn't speak english... I told them when I move to Mexico, I would learn spanish... I have no intentions of moving there, so I don't give a rats ass about learning spanish... since they're in the U.S. they should learn the damn language... Now my daughter comes home, saying she's learning spanish... in the 2nd friggin grade! I don't think I like that idea... I'm not racist at all, I like everyone, but if you don't speak english, I'd like ya a whole lot better if you stayed at home...

Face it; You've got Whitefolks who think Mexicans are speaking Spanish, Spaniards who take it as an insult to be called Mexican, and Mexicans born in America who can't speak either. I cooked fine dining 12 years here in AZ and there are so many dialects and different slangs, often time these guys'll be rappin' with each other when one'll stop, look at the other and go "heh?" They don't even know what each others saying. I might've misspeled a word I've never typed before, but I knew what it meant when I typed it

Not to get the topic going in a completely different direction, BUT I don't really look all that Asian to begin with. Yet people will often ask me, "Hey, what are you?" I mean, are you fucking kidding me? I've never really figured out how to respond to this. Usually I just sit there with a pissed off-confused look on my face. Then the questions about knowing kung fu and making some kick ass egg rolls start.

I agree with this Moby. We want our little girl to at least be fluent in one other language, and we are going to do our best to learn it with her. I think it's a shame we only learn one language, though I do not believe we as a society should have to tailor our language to accomodate foreigners who come here. No other country does this, why should we.

Well I have heard the "learn the language," argument my whole life. I usually hear this complaint from those who work in retail that have to deal with spanish speakers. Hey the customer is always right, if I was trying to sell a chinese guy something you better believe I would do my best to learn some chinese.
Then I hear whining from people who hear groups of hispanics speaking spanish in public. My answer is mind your own fucking business. If people feel more comfortable conversing in their native language that is their business. There are just some phrases in spanish that simply do not exist in english. Spanish is much more effective at conveying emotion, positive or negative.
Any other examples where people speaking other languages inconvenienced you.

I was trying to buy some fast food gift certificates for an old neighbor. She is to old to cook now I guess.....anyway, I had to go to three (I swear, three) places before someone spoke enough english so I could buy a gift certificate. And I speak spanish pretty good, they just couldn't understand.
Kind of a shame. Kinda like me working the counter in Mexico. Que? Think the place would lose business? Of course. What Mexican in their right mind would go there to order whatever from me, If I don't understand what they are saying.
All this oppression/racism shit is all just old tired bullshit anyways. Bring on the revolution, I don't care. I hope it turns out just like Mexico with it's stellar history of exceptional government and human rights. Not to mention a great economy and global respect. Let's not forget values. Everyone knows you can't payoff a Mexican judge/cop/politician. I'm glad there won't be tons of illegal drugs being brought into the country, and maybe the coyotes will stop robbing and murdering the Mexican "undocumented immigrant" or home invading those same "undocs"
Face it Ivan, the Mexicans have a huge perception problem. Maybe you and your family, educated as you are, and down for La Raza as you are, should work on that.
I once heard something that puts a lot of this in perspective. During WWII a democratic President, put all of the Japanese people living in America into camps, regardless of their status. That was just 60 years ago. Certainly prejudice and hatred for these people was everywhere. In SPITE of that, the Japanese people have thrived. Have you ever seen a Japanese ghetto? Have you ever heard of a Japanese person claiming they didn't get this or that because of racism etc.?
Methinks not. A proud, hardworking culture.
A culture that does, instead of running at the mouth. What is your culture? I keep hearing about it......what do I use to judge? What I see not only here in America, but Mexico as well? On what basis do the Mexican peole wished to be viewed? It's a serious question. Get with your family and talk about it. Simply stating that white people don't like you because your skin is brown not only sounds like, but is a gigantic cop-out. I want to know, am I to judge on what I experience and see everyday, the neighborhoods I drive through, and the people I interact with everyday?

C'mon Ivan. Do you or don't you think Mexico has a perception problem?
What are the American people to think about Mexicans, what are we to base our opinions on?
Do you think Mexicans living in America would rather have the Mexican government rule, or the American government rule?
What is your opinion on why the country of Mexico continues to be a poor country in spite of it's tropical location, beaches, and the best food in the world?
And of course, why are you so ugly?

Well imacsae, that was about one of strangest posts I've read. Total racist garbage put out there to get a rise out of people. Then when people call you on it, it's a joke. "everyone loves me.."
Do you like pointing guns at people then just laughing it off saying it's just a joke? You have a weird sense of humor hombre.
Just because you have an identity crisis going on is no reason to post reverse-racist bullshit like this. And for what purpose? What was the basis of this post anyway? I didn't get it.
Oh and about retaking of your land, tell your amigos to pack a lunch! I don't give a rats ass what your credentials are BA or BS , that sounded just about as stupid as some of the uneducated Klan retoric we hear around here sometime.
I can see you're another ungrateful, hateful. Congrats, your folks must be proud.

I don't see where the racism is in my post. I think you are all taking much too seriously. I never claimed any superiority to anybody I just pointed out that as hispanics become more affluent and gain higher positions then their power base will increase. Not to mention that we are now the largest minority in the U.S. Notice that is still minority there are still many more anglo saxons than anything else. Oh and by the way many of you have a very narrow view of who hispanics are. Not all of us have prison tatoos and live in slums.

No matter what the race, the self-reliance and sense of responsibility that comes from working hard and earning a good living is within reach. That's the beauty of our country. That's the part that welfare and public assistance kills. Go out, get an education, get a good job (on your qualifications and merits) and earn a shitload of money. You spend too much time contemplating what's wrong with everyone else it appears to me. You're awful presumptious...why don't you just say white people? Are you so shallow to think that every white person in America is of anglo-decent? As far as I can tell, you have nothing to really complain about. You have a *good* education, a loving family and you reside here in the U.S. Walk a mile in the shoes of the under priviledged for a while before you start looking to blame others for the way you feel about your personal situation. Be thankful for the good things in life you take for granted. Hombre. Because in these posts not only do you sound foolish, but quite selfish as well.

Good, then theres hope for you. I have two brothers in law, one names Oaxaca, one named Castro. I employ, and have been employed by Mexican people my whole working life, (25years).
I vacation in Mexico, and it's my favorite food, Ive even had trepas a few times.
Some of the prettiest women on the planet.
