I've looked up the manual, I've searched this web-site, I've searched google, but I couldn't find anything relevant.

Does anybody know what the critical angle for roll-over is on the X?

In other words, on a stock X, without lift-kit, without accessories on the roof-rack, etc..., at what angle of sideways tilt does the X become unstable and prone to rolling over?

I do not know that anyone has tried it out yet. I know that it depends upon your actions while in an offcamber situation. I think you can rollover at as little as 2-25 degrees.
Oleg- How far off camber were you when it rolled?

Nissan does not make the information public for legal reasons.

I do know that the Pathfinder has a rated angle of 47 degrees static/parked/not moving.

I've had my Xterra at 38 degrees, and really wouldn't want to take it much further.

I just recieved a "Lev-O-Gage" from 4x4 Connection. Seven bucks. Bought one for Carlton and myself. That may be helpful if you are concerned about the angles.

They even spelled out angle of approach (thank you Ian ), departure angle and more. It'd be nice to get that mind of info on the X.

I remember seeing this on the A/C board and wished they had that for the Xterra.
I've been at some pretty serious angles but I want to know the limits too.

Well, Carlton and I were talking about that very thing last night and I figured it was pretty close to 36, so you made it farther than I thought feasible.

That probably makes 36 a max roll number fairly close to real life for folks w/ roof mounted gear....I'm pretty sure I've been in the low 30's at least twice based on observation, and it was enough to get my attention!

Why are there differences between approach and departure angles from an XE and an SE. ACtually why are their differences between 4x2 and 4x4? In most cases I can understand the differences beteen 4 wheel drive and not, bc of diffent suspensions, but isnt the X the same accross the board? Isnt the limiting factor the front bumper and the rear tire?

The only thing that I can think of is weight, but the difference is only 300 pounds between the 2WD and the 4WD. Perhaps the clearance difference is due to the transfer case/differential on the front. I have not looked that closely, but I assumed they were all as high as the front crossmember.



Now, the difference betweent he XE and the SE is the Sport Suspension.

Think tires! 2001 XE 2wd had P235, XE 4WD (utility pkg required) has P265, SE has the oversize rims. That would have the most to do with it.

The Sport package has slightly stiffer springs, and the SE comes with them standard.

I wondered the same thing.

I imagine it is different wheel/tire packages.

The same springs and torsion bars are used all around. The only difference in the setup across any X is that the torsion bars on the 2WD models aren't cranked as far since they don't support as much weight.

Nope. Same springs on every Xterra.

I had my X at 20 degrees and I know I had some serious pucker going on. Don't think I would want to go much further.

Lets also take into account the KA24 motor vs. the VG33

Ill tell you one thing, it isnt too much I almost rolled mine over a small hill on one side of a pass, the hill was about 2 feet high and I felt my tires on the right lift and drop again, whew! talk about your heart stopping!!! Be careful out there!

I know my KA24 has a different differential.I wonder about the suspension.
