Hey there,
I'm going to pick up my X from the dealer tomorrow. Just wanted to know what the recommended "break in " period is....I've been hearing that you shouldn't drive over 60mph for the first 1000 miles. Are these numbers accurate?
Thanks

yes, more or less. It's all in the owners manual and the dealer should, if he/she is worth anything, explain the break-in requirements to you before you patch out of the lot. Just be gentle with her up front and she will treat you right down the road.

Just remember that the first oil change is at 1K...not 3K

Thanks guys...I am so excited...I've been trapped in Honda Accord hell for the past 3 years. I might have to fake a stomach bug just to leave work early so I can go stare at it in the dealer lot.

Thanks for the heads up on the oil change...I had no clue

If I'm not mistaken, be more wary of high rpm's than high speeds. Go easy on the gas for those low-rpm shifts.

Thanks.....I've been keeping her under 2500.
Quick question....When you guys change your oil, do you prefer synthetic or regular oil? Just thinking ahead to my x's first oil change....
PS..I think I'm in love.

Put a few thousand miles on the engine before going to synthetic. I've been advised 15k by the guy at the dealership, and I've come to trust him quite well. I'd go at least 10k anyway.

Yeah its not so much speed as it is those high RPM's and dont be affraid to use synthetic on your first oil change. No need to wait.

I have seen postings somewhere on this board that recommended that during the break-in period, changing the oil after your first 1000 miles was a good idea. I tried to schedule an oil change at the dealership and they told me not to bother. Save my money and use it towards the monthly payment. They did however, recommend every 3000 or so miles not the 7500 Nissan states. Can anyone provide more info on this? Thanks!

There are 2 schedules in the manual, sched 1 and sched 2. One is regular, the other severe duty. I forget which is which, but one has oil changes ever 7500 or so.

Sorry gang, my mistake. Got my numbers mixed up. I meant 3750. I got the 7500 from a MVP card my dealer gave me. They change the oil for free every 7500.

Oil change, 1000 miles, if it helps, it's worth a few bucks.

My sales girl didn't tell me a thing about the break in period or the first change at 1000. I drove the truck home on the interstate when I left the dealer well over the recomended break in speed. Wasn't till that night while sitting at work reading the owners manual did I find out about the break in period. OOPS!!

Yeah, I did the same thing...had to drive on the highway to get home. I'm not real worried though. I think that if it was a big deal, the dealers and manufacturers would make it very clear. Did you know that the new BMW M3 limits your rpms until the engine warms up every morning? It keeps it under 4000 for the first 15 minutes. Gives the oil a chance to coat the inside of the engine.
