The upgrade is on hold since the board is running fine. I could enable global search, but I see no use for it in a forum with categories laid out as they are here.

The categories may be well laid out but the posts sure aren't.

Very true. Searching IS a pain, and a global search would probably kill a lot of the "I searched but didn't find" posts.

The only problem I have is some of the categories overlap. 4x4 and advance 4x4? I don't really see the difference at this point. Performance and Drivetrain? Aren't they the same thing. How to get more performance out of my drivetrain? I can't see a single topic under Drivetrain that couldn't go somewhere else.

Where to put a locker thread? Drivetrain because it goes in the axle?; Parts and Accessories because it's an accessory?; Advanced 4x4 because that's where it's used?; Or maybe it's someone in AZXC asking so it ends up in their club area. Take your pick, since this board is moderated rather loosely no one will care to move any but the most blatant.

I'd like a global search function too. Also any butt munching moron who posts a thread with a "cute" title rather than an informative one should be strung up and tortured.

4x4 is for people new to 4x4 vehicles - "What does this lever do?".
Advanced 4x4 is for people with 4x4 experience - "How would I get over this obstacle?"
Performance is for things that provide more performance - "Will this coffee can make my Xterra faster?"
Drivetrain is for stock drivetrain parts - "Why are this six little balls lying next to my front wheel?"

A locker thread would go where it's most useful.
"What's a locker?" - 4x4
"How do I hook up the plumbing on my ARB Air Locker?" - Advanced 4x4

It's all pretty straight forward...

As said - the forums themselves are laid out fairly well, but the posts usually aren't. I loathe searching and usually try to google the answer in hopes that it will find the thread (and more often this does better than the in-forum search! IRONY ++). If you turn it on I'll make you brownies.

Why are people searching all the time ? I think I've used it once in the last 6 months.

I think its because you cant ask a question on here thats ever been asked before and not get flamed for not using the search.
