It's not the format that necessarily sucks but the monkey behind the keyboard But hey, why use logic - extremism is so much more fun!

JPEGs, PNGs and GIFs all look great when used in the proper situation. The problem is when an individual uses a JPEG when he should've used a GIF and vice versa.
PNGs are totally useless in the web world. The support for this format is lacking and certain browsers do not support it at all. But, PNGs are great to import into Flash/Director when one needs an alpha channel for tranparent backgrounds or drop shadows.

Weird. Looks just fine to me! Maybe you should upgrade your browser.

Okay, I have no idea why you would call me a rabid OS geek. The patent on GIF expires, Unisys isn't going to renew and guess what - critical mass wins. PNG is doomed. PNG is doomed? Maybe, but not because PNG is a bad/useless format. It just hasn't been picked up in the industry, why, I have no idea.
And besides, GIF's don't have to be ugly or restricted to 256 colors. I agree, not all GIFs are ugly, I for one used them all the time back in the day before everyone had 16bit color. Though I'm yet to see how you can use more than 255 colors.
It's not the format that necessarily sucks but the monkey behind the keyboard I never said everything sucks BUT PNG.
But hey, why use logic - extremism is so much more fun! I'm going to burn your house down now.

Exactly, simply because browsers do not support it well. If browsers could use it, a PNG would be very neat to use as a web developer, especially with the alpha layer.

PNG's are very useful if you use them for what they are intended for. That being vector-based graphics. For most uses, the raster-based (bitmapped) compression methods are more useful, but if you want graphics that are truely scaleable, and with editable elements PNG is the way to go. I use PNG for my "library" images in Fireworks, then export to gid or jpg as appropriate to use on the final page. IMO, PNG is a much better replacement for GIF's (incidently, the patent expired a few days ago), but not all browsers support them correctly. PNG is a poor substitute for JPG, period.

Anyhow, Fireworks does save in PNG format by default, and saves all vector paths as such. I dunno. *shrug*
