When I was in my early 20's and reasonably fit (I didn't get winded walking up a few flights of stairs, like I do now!), I hiked from Happy Isles to Half Dome (17 mi round-trip and a 4500' change in elevation) in about 9-1/2 hours, including an hour-long stop at the top. Be sure to bring a lot of water (at least a 2-liter bottle) and a hearty lunch.
We started the hike around 8am and came back around 6pm. Plan to buy dinner at Yosemite Village (or equiv), rather than prepare your meal back at camp; you've already worked enough for the day.
