From "Guide to Northern California Backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails"
Trail: Peligreen Jeepway

Location: East of Red Bluff, southeast of Paynes Creek

Difficulty: Moderate. After a well-graded forest road, the trail narrows to a rough, one-lane path over hilly, remote terrain. Portions of the route are rocky and bone jarring. Other portions can be slick and muddy if wet. Steep in places with loose rock, but there are no difficult obstacles. The first part of Jeepway passes through a burned out area where fallen trees have blocked the route in several places. Bypasses have formed but they are faint and route finding can be challenging at times. Tight brush in places may scratch vehicle. Suitable for any seasoned, high-clearance 4-wheel-drive SUV. The trail sees little use, so don't count on help from passersby. Best driven in spring and fall.

Features: A long winding drive over a series of rugged volcanic ridges. Some drivers will find the area starkly beautiful; others, harsh and desolate. The route passes through the Tehama State Wildlife Area which is closed December through March. It is also closed the last week in October for hunting season when a permit is required.

Time & Distance: The entire unpaved loop measures 36 miles, of which 24 miles are easy forest roads. Allow a full day.
Date: November 13th & 14th
Elevation: Approx. 2,000 ft - 3,300 ft.

This trail is ranked in just about the middle of the moderate trails listed in the book. The easiest of the Moderate trails is Eagle Peak, which a stock Xterra w/ step rails has no problem. And, the difficult side of Moderate trails is Bear Valley Loop, which did require a stock Xterra to take off flaps and rails.... So, I think that Peligreen Jeepway would require a stock Xterra to take off your flaps and rails, but that should be it....of course, with careful driving is a must, anyway... wink This trail should be perfect for those who want to go camping/off-roading in your stock Xterras, and I'm sure those w/ modified Xterra would have a great time as well.

There is a (very) primitive camp site almost half way of the trail: Black Oak Grove Camp Ground. This is likely to be our camping spot.

I've contacted Fish & Game a couple of weeks ago regarding the hunting season... As long as we run this trail in Nov., we're okay. smile (No one should be shooting at colorful Xterras, anyway laugh ) And, Nov. 6th & 7th might seem like a better time for some since Hell Hole run is on Oct. 23rd & 24th, but I have a personal reason to be taking 6&7 weekend off....so, sorry if you're counting on that weekend for camping. :p

Oh...Only thing that is going to stop us from going on this trip would be...weather. ...Of course. [LOL]

I don't have the meeting time/locations clearly set, yet, but I'll post it as soon as I sort that out.

Who's up for it? Please post any questions you might have in this thread.

I am definately going to try and make it to this. Had this trail circled in my book for some time now. Not sure if I will do it as a day run or camp....I will play it by ear at this point:

Snow...I'm willing to experience camping in snow once. But, because of the elevation, I don't think we'll get to see any snow... I think it's more like...rain. Just imagining about setting up a tent on muddy ground is... [Uh Oh !]

The East end of the trail is about 15 minutes from my buddys hunting cabin, and we have had snow there before.. Plan on a VERY earily departure from the bay area.. Reno may eb closer.. (I don't know where the west end is.. East end takes about 6 hours to get there in winter)

BTW Count me in on this one.. if my A-arms ever get here..

From napa to red bluff is 2 1/2 hours and at least another 1 1/2 to the east trail head better way of starting. The trail ends in the Tehema wilderness once there you can leave the long way out out or go the short way which is a fun trail and is stock friendly you will need 4wheel drive up this section. Red bluff is the last area to gas up. Im going ask for the weekend off. I gotta run this trail been there during hunting season and it looks good. Put me as a question mark for going.

Red Bluff to the trail head in the book is about 30 miles and is paved all the way... Well, that's what the book say. Let's hope that it won't really take us 1 1/2 hours to the trail head. Besides, we might be talking about 2 different locations as "trail head." wink

I found some more information about the trail:

http://www.mtbr.com/trails/California-Allotherareas/Peligreen-GrapevineTrail.html

GPS waypoint for the campground:

http://wayhoo.com/index/a/wdet/wid/93565/waypoint/Black+Oak+Grove/ste/California/

BTW, San Jose to Paynes Creek (which is east of Red Bluff) is about a 4-hour drive (244 mi). Just FYI.

Also, do you want to borrow my PETT toilet for the trip? It might be more comfortable than digging a hole.

I forgot, we are alwayse hauling a trailer.. 55mph sucks on I5.. at 70 it would ba faster, once you get east of Red Bluff i think it is all 55mph max to paynes creek, with a few slower spots aroung Red Bluff..

It is paved up through paynes creek till you get to the tehema wild life refuge. Then it is a dirt road that is in pretty good condition just very bouncy so you want to air down. Depending on which route you go in the tehema wildlife refuge one way is much shorter and has nice trail down 4wheel drive needed. That is if we enter from the west. If we enter the east you still have a dirt road for about hour. Pretty smooth road. Count me in I got the weekend off. I have a map some where of the tehema wildlife I will see If I can find.

Cool. [Smoking] Let's hope that the weather is going to cooperate. laugh

I plan to hit the trail from Paynes Creek to the east side...clockwise on the loop (or semi-loop).

That is good to know because she was already assuming she would be the only one.

Does anyone know any more details about this camp spot we plan on staying at? Like you said it is primitive so I am already assuming pack in pack out....no water....no bathrooms. Are there actual designated spots?

Also is anyone else bringing their dog? I am trying to decide whether or not to bring my Lab pup along. Just curious

Pack in and pack it out and no toilets. The last toilets are right before you hit the actual trail.

...Weave uphill through Black Oak Grove Campground at 3.2 miles. Not much here except a few fire rings and shade.
Quote:
From Backcountry Adventure: Northern California
The USFS map shows an undeveloped camping area here; there are no facilities, but it is possible to find a pleasant shady campsite.
So, once we get there, we should be able to recognize this so-called campground. And, if you need to go, there are two options: shovel or a PETT as Dean posted earlier. The PET or something similar would be the best way to go when environmental impacts are concerned, but I have a shovel at this point. :p

A Lab pup? Sure... I don't know if anyone else has a dog, though...

Yeah I don't have a problem using the shovel method as long as I know that is my only option going in it won't be a problem metally. lol laugh

I have spent a week out in the Black Rock desert before so I got a lot of practice with the shovel method there. eek
