Kevin, since you've been to the area, do you know if the area near the camp ground can possibly provide us enough firewood (can we collect enough from the ground)?

You start in a game refuge which is mostly oaks and then head up. Depends on where we camp the higher the more wood there is.I will bring a chainsaw so cutting wood isnt a problem. I can also bring firewood just so we have some dry wood burn with. I dont think we should have a problem finding wood up there.

Weather forecast is looking good for the next 10-days for Paynes Creek so far... I haven't decided meeting times yet, but.. I think I'm going list the following for meeting places. 1. Montgomery Ward parking lot, off of I-680, Monument Blvd exit 2. Safeway in Corning 3. Black Oak Grove Campground on the trail Safeway 600 Edith St. Corning, CA 96021 ph: (530) 824-2467 Since I'm lazy, I'll work on the meeting time at each location later, later on this week...or next. Oh, and if anyone who happens to be thinking about showing up at the campground... from the book I have (again) To Get there: from Highways 99 and 36 east of Red Bluff, take Hwy 36 east in the direction of Lassen Volcanic National Park. After 20 miles, turn right on Paynes Creek Loop at mile marker 64. Go 0.4 miles and turn right on Plum Creek Road just after Paynes Creek Store. Follow paved road 8.3 miles to Ponderosa Way (F.S. Road 28N29, also County Road 707B).
Trail Description: Reset your odometer and turn right on Pnderosa Way. Stay on this wide gravel road as it winds south through scenic forest. Cross a wooden bridge at 9.6 miles. Stay on the main road as it curves slightly to the right at 11.7 miles where F.S. 28N29F crooses. Turn right at 12.6 miles at a sign for Peligreen Jeep Trail marked as F.S. 28N57.
Reset your odometer as you turn right. Bear left at 0.7 miles then at 1.4 miles, turn right at another sign for the Peligreen Jeep Tral . This route drops downhill into a fire-damaged canyon where many dead trees have fallen across the trail. (If you wish to avoid this part of the route, you can continue straight on a longer but easier loop around the canyon.) The first blockage of the trail is at 1.8 miles. Detour around on the left side and rejoin the trail within 0.1 miles, then bear left downhill. Weave your way around other smaller blockages as the trail gradually swings right downhill. You reach bottom at 2.2 and begin to climb as the trail becomes more defined. A road goes right at 2.8 miles but don't turn yet. Continue just a bit farther to 2.9 miles where you'll see a large sign for Rancheria Hiking Trail straight ahead.
Reset your odometer and turn right at above sign. Weave around some big trees as the trail follows along a fence bordering the Ishi Wilderness. Stay left around a large log blocking the trail at 0.4 miles. This is the site of Peligreen Place but nothing remains. The road weaves uphill within sight of the wilderness boundary. Turn left at 1.3 miles where a faint trail goes right uphill along Indian Ridge. Pass through a fence opening at 1.5 miles. More fence openings will follow. Make a steep, rocky climb at 2.8 miles. Weave uphill through Black Oak Grove Campground at 3.2 miles. Not much here except a few fire rings and shade...

Corning isnt a necessary meeting place. Red bluff would be much better. Its the last place to fill up gas. As you exit the second exit and make a right there is a holiday grocery store on the left. I know you guys like your safeways But to stop in corning which is about 20 miles from red bluff doesnt make sense. I just realized you plan on running this trial east to west Not all the signs are there for the trail. The only sign is at the begining of the trail. So people wanting to join late its not recommened Unless you know the area. We will probably want to leave red bluff no latter then 11:00 So we start the trail by 12:30 ish and and still have daylight on the trail.

Originally posted by outbkjack: I just realized you plan on running this trial east to west Running from east to west is funny for some reason? Why doesn't make sense? It's only 20 miles right? Trail itself is only 36 miles. It's about 60 miles to unpaved section from Corning (1st 1/4 of a tank), run the trail and back to the pavement (2/3 of a tank gone). There should be plenty of gas left in the tank to get back to Red Bluff or Corning or wherever... Besides, Pleasant Hill to Corning is about 150 miles/2 hour 15 min. It's a good time to take a break. Some of us are also driving another hour before getting to Pleasant Hill. Anyway, since we all have to drive a good distance, we'll be stopping at Safeway only for a (rest room) break. Please do all your grocery shopping before the trip to shorten stopping time at each location. 0800 Meet at Montgomery Ward in Pleasant Hill 1015 Arrive at/Meet Safeway in Corning (30 min. max break) 1045 Leave Safeway in Corning 1115 Arrive at Red Bluff for gas stop (15 min.) 1130 Leave Red Bluff for Paynes Creek 1210 Arrive at Paynes Creek 1240 Arrive at the Trail head This is not a final... If a majority wants to skip stopping at Corning, we can. If a majority wants to fill a tank in Corning and skip Red Bluff, we can. And, we don't have to run the trail from east to west, either. I planned it that way just because that's how the book shows the route. If someone is willing to lead us all from the other way, I'm okay with that, too.

east to west is fine its probably easier because your heading down hill most of the time. And as for gas My 4cyl tank doesnt hold as much as you guys but that is all right I can bring an extra can. meeting at safe way in corning is fine with me then.

A bit easier is good...for a group of 7 or 8 trucks. More challenging going uphill sounds fun, but we wouldn't have much time to spend at each obstacles, either. Well, that's still a tentative schedule. We can still change things around. Besides, I do agree that it is a good idea to fill a tank at the nearest location to the trail. Your tank might be a bit smaller than ours, but we also have Andy whose truck consume gas faster than other 6-cyl (because of his 33" tires).

Robert, you shouldn't have to backtrack... I'll give you a call ahead, and we can meet on the road... We should be just fine... If anyone is interested, I took a picture of the map off of the book. Peligreen Jeepway Trail Map

Very nice area you live. I haven't found much information on interesting trails in the north... Do you know of any good ones in your area?

outbkjack you have a p.m.
just a note to all the stockers planning on attending this trip... I (being a stocker myself) was informed that it would be a good idea to remove your step rails and mud flaps before this trip!

Some of you might be already 4-wheeling for a while, and know all the rules and etiquette. But, please read the pages from the link below thoroughly if you have never read the pages before. The site lists very good information clearly. If you're new to the sport, it is very important to know. If you already knew, it's still good to re-read and refresh your memories. Depending on polarbear I will hook up with him and catch you guys as you pass susuin If he cant go I will meet you guys at the safeway corning. The meeting times should work right just as long we are on time. With it getting dark early It gives us about 4hrs to do 3 miles on the trail and still have a little light left to set up camp. It shouldnt take that long but just in case.

Why not just "on the trail" or "at the campground"? If I wanted some twised answers, I would have asked everyone to make it more time-consuming for me to figure out in the 1st place.
