So, I'm trying this again... cool

Is anyone interested in wheeling/camping trip on 11/08-09? I have a trail in mind, but it's not Poker Flat OHV this time.

Let me know...

Well, I guess it would have been a bit more helpfull for anyone who has time to come to make up their minds if they knew where the trail is located... [Too much XOC]

This time I am actually thinking about NS#44: Peligreen-Grapevine Jeepway as Slamson was bringing up. It is approximately 20 to 25 miles west of Red Bluff, 10 miles south of Hwy 36.

I would go to Poker Flat OHV trail, but the weather doesn't look good... It says that it would keep snow/rain for a while...

Here's little more details for the trail.
Quote:
From Backcountry Adventures: Northern California
Trail: NS#44 - Peligreen-Grapevine Jeepway trail
Starting Point: Northern Seirra #42: Ponderosa Way, 1.3 miles south of Panther Sring Forest
Finishing Point: Northern Sierra #43: Hogsback Road, 4.7 miles west of Northern Sierra #42: Ponderosa Way
Total Mileage: 19.8 miles
Unpaved Mileage: 19.8 miles
Driving Time: 5 hours
Elevation Range: 1,400 - 3,900 feet
Difficulty Rating: 6 [ThumbsUp]
Scenic Rating: 10
Remote Rating: +1
It takes me about 3.5 hours to get to unpaved road from home, Mountain View.

If anyone has questions about this trail/trip, let me know...

Ahhhh I cant go and I really wanted to go on this trail. I have it bookmarked...highlighted...and everything. The 8th I have a training class to go to...I would kip it but I paid for it so I feel like I have to go.

If it was the 9th......I may be able to...but it would be an all day drive so we would have to get up there early with dark fall around 5:00pm. Oh well....I'll see what you guys decide to do

Oh, crap... [Uh Oh !] I wasn't actually expecting any responses to my original post.

Ummm...okay. NS#44: Peligreen-Grapevine Jeepway actually begins from another trail, but the general location of the trail is...let's see...about 30 miles west of Red Bluff, and 10 miles south of Paynes Creek off of Hwy 36. Peligreen Place, CA - You might want to zoom out a bit.

Red Bluff might sound a bit far to drive, but it only ( confused ) takes me 3.5 hours. It's basically about the same as driving to Lake Tahoe.

I think the difficulty rating of 6 is about the limit of stock xterra....of course, I'm just guessing here. Maybe the driver skills can take it to 7 or higher.

Now, one thing that I have to remind you is the weather. Weather in Red Bluff I've been watching closely, but it says it'll rain...40%. So, I was going to decide around the middle of this week if I still wanted to go. I think I will go if any one of you still wants to go whatever the weather might be, though.

My guess is it's going to be stock-friendly, but perhaps not 2WD-friendly. Tony Huegel's guide books are designed for the average SUV owner who actually has an interest in finding out what the t-case shifter is for. Remember: that trail we visited right after the Xterra Championships was considered "moderate" in his book. The Barker Pass Loop (not Dollar Hill) is among the "more difficult" trails featured.

At the worst you may need to remove your step rails and mud flaps.

Required? confused ...Ummm..Maybe, remove step rails & mud flaps? I'm sure AT tires would be helpful since the ground is likely to be wet by rain...at least some spots.

I have never been to the trail. I can only guess from its difficulty rating of 6 that stock xterra would be able to handle it with careful driving.

Oh, and typical recovery equipments would be good, such as straps, shackles, etc.

Hopefully, it's not snowing where you guys are going. It's going to be some cold camping.

I was just looking at the weekly weather report and it shows rain starting tomorrow night and going through Sunday. I noticed the trail book stated don't try this trail in wet weather (may have something to do with the notorious clay soil they have up in that area)? Or maybe that is just the books disclaimer so that nobody can go back and sue them for an accident after the fact.

I am looking at this as 2-day trip because of the location of the trail. I have to drive 3.5 to 4 hours to get to the trail head. If I wanted to make it to a day trip, that's almost total 8 hours of driving. After 8 hrs of driving, not much day light is left to wheel or do anything... [Uh Oh !]

Removing step rails and mud flaps is just suggested. If you want to keep them on, you can do that, of course. smile

Yea...The weather has been saying the same thing since the day after I originally started this post. Shower w/ 40% chance. I know what 20%-30% chance is like. ...I'm hoping that it won't be like thunderstorm rain... [Uh Oh !]

Really? eek The book says that? Ummm... I need to read it again...

The thing is this difficulty-rating-6 trail is adjacent to 2 other trails that are rated..what 3? (or something like that). Those are pretty much like dirt roads. So, if this trail condition is that bad, we can always just decide to go for those other trails. I'm sure the wet (muddy) condition would make it little more interesting than you'd see when dry.

Not to be a post hijacker or anything, but I'll be taking my new CC up to Eagle lakes off of I-80 this Sunday along with a couple other norcal guys to play in the snow. This is probably a 20 min trip for you Casper if you want to join us. I won't be doing anything hard in my new truck so you'll be OK.

You can get more info here!

It is Backcountry Adventures: Northern California I think this is the cheapest you can find around. wink

Also, Sierra Nevada Byways by Tony Huegel is a good one, too.

....Yea...I've been following that thread, too. I think it's actually a good chance for Casper; he doesn't have to drive much at all. smile I'd join them, but I haven't really had a enjoyable snow run... [Uh Oh !]

Well, I guess the weather doesn't want me wheeling/camping this weekend. It's going to rain or snow everywhere...

Oh, well...That's what happens when I try to go for a fall wheeling... [Uh Oh !]

Yeah my luck has not been good either.....and like you I try and stay way from the snow since I have been stuck at least once the last two years....mainly from my own stupidity.

Hey Tolleyy, I have had a chance to log on to the other site and say I can go, but I will tomorrow. One question, it says to take the Indian Springs exit. I am not sure I remember where that exit is. confused I know where the Eagle Lake exit is. Is this the one you guys are talking about?
