55mph max. Any faster and I would wonder what the hell you need 4x4 for, when clearly you can walk on water.
If it merits 4 wheel drive, it does not merit any faster speeds.
Unless of course, you have a Porshe 928 w/awd!

No problems doing 70+ on dirt roads in Moab last Fall.

I don't recommend it unless you've been driving 4WDs and AWDs for a while.

I did 65mph on a 3" inch snow packed interstate with ease. The rpms nor the engine was indicating any struggle. The Xterra rules in snow with 4WD!!

Why so fast? 'round here it's known as "too fast for conditions" and can get you a ticket.

I was under the impression that the 55mph max was the max speed that you could be going when you shift into 4H. I thought that once you were 4H, that you could go faster, not that you would ever really NEED to go faster in 4H. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Judson --
Per the Xterra manual the max speed to shift from 2h to 4h is 25 mph. Maybe you could shift at 55 -- tho when I imagine that I just get visions of the tranny grinding into oblivion.
The manual states a 55mph cap for driving in 4h, tho this weekend, I drove at 65 in 4h. It seems that if there is a little slip, it can't hurt to be able to compensate with both axles.

My 1988 4Runner did 75+ in 4Hi no problem.

There really is no limit for 4WD in any vehicle I am aware of. The front end turning is not different than the back end turning.

You're right xoc I've done 80(Before I get yelled at it is a common thing when going through Wyoming on the flat Interstate, when there isn't any wind)Also once in 4hi and not going into reverse, at any point, you can shift from 2hi to 4hi at any speed. Which is why I was going so fast from dry to icy patches on the intersate. I only have a hardbody pickup(no X yet) but I'm sure nothing has really changed in the 4wd mechanism between the two.

this is my first 4x4- I think I've figured out when to use hi and lo- sometimes when I go into 4h, I don't get it in all the way (apparently) because you can hear it spin like it's not catching. Then if I stop it will go in and stop the noise.
